Seawater Conversion No Answer for California
Folks who think California's urgent water needs can be solved with de-salted sea water are letting their imaginations run away with them, scientists and engineers say.
The idea of getting fresh water from the sea is nothing new. In fact, it's been done for centuries. Today, a lot of companies make seawater conversion equipment for ships and for places—like ocean islands—where fresh water just isn't available.
Then why can't we de-salt ocean water in California instead of building the Feather River Project?
There are two big reasons why not.
First of all, it costs too much. The best commercial methods of seawater conversion now in use would produce water costing at least three times as much as naturally-fresh water brought from Northern California. Every so oft-en somebody claims a "breakthrough" in reducing the cost of converting seawater, but these claims are mostly based on laboratory tests and therefor don't mean much. Another thing people often forget is that de-salted sea water has to be distributed away from the ocean, adding still more cost. To distribute converted ocean water would take canals and pumps just about like those to be built for the Feather River Project.
A second reason why practical sea water conversion is a lot farther away than many people think is that we use a whopping lot of water.
Each one of us uses, on the average, from 150 to 200 gallons of water every day. Multiply this by the number of people in California and you can see why we would have to practically line the coast with conversion plants to make enough fresh water. One statistician figured out that all the water conversion plants now operation around the world working together couldn't de-salt enough water to irrigate a medium-size California farms. Another expert, an engineer with the University of California, says that if we tried to distill enough water to meet just the needs Southern California we would have to burn all the natural gas now being used in the Southland.
Can research change this picture? Can't we break the barrier with atomic power?
Scientists working on this problem seem to fall into two groups: those who think we can slash costs of conversion at some distant future date, and those who believe costs will never go down very much. Practically nobody who understands the problems looks for cost reductions so enough to compete with free water systems like the Feathery Coffey Bride.

California
Figured out that all the sea conversion plants now in action around the world work together couldn't de-salt water to irrigate a dozen farm-size California farms. An expert, an engineer with the University of California, says that it tried to distill enough sea water to meet just the needs of western California we would burn all the natural gas being used in the Southland. Research change this pic. Can't we break the cost war with atomic power?
Artists working on this problem to fall into two groups—who think we can slash of conversion at some disuture date, and those who the costs will never go down much. Practically nobody understands the problem for cost reductions soon to compete with fresh systems like the Feather River Project. Even the most optimistic researchers agree that we must move ahead full speed to bring Northern California water to parched areas of the state.
Use of atomic energy to cut costs is another illusion. Actually it raises costs because the A-power plants are so expensive to build and operate. It's like paying ten million dollars for an automobile that doesn't need gasoline. You end up in the hole.
An eastern scientist working on seawater conversion put the whole problem into focus when he declared during a recent tour of this state:
"It would be cheaper for California to go to the Ohio River for water than to try to meet its needs with de-salted ocean water."
Sea water conversion is a romantic idea, but like a lot of romance, it's pretty expensive.
