Electrical System
Have the electrical system of your car carefully checked from time to time, advises the National Automobile Club.
A defective electrical system can cause failure in the operation of your starting motor, lights, windshield wipers, horn, and such extras as power windows and power seats.
Avoid such troubles by checking that system.
Prior to his departure from the U.S., Burpee sent two large boxes of his American Marigolds to American Ambassador Douglas MacArthur II in Tokyo with the suggestion that these might be presented to the Emperor of Japan "as a slight token of the friendship of the American people for the people of Japan."
Burpee is president of the Atlee Burpee Secu Co., which is the largest mail order seed house in the world.
Burpee is attempting to have the American Marigolds (the Friendship Flowers) as the national floral emblem of the United States.

Architects Dunaway & Jones, A.L.A. have arranged for planting areas at the huge master bedroom window, at the fireplace and again at the rear terrace. Some of the featured details in the Aristocrat are double bedroom closets, a sliding recreation room door flanked by bookshelves, folding plantation shutters, a breakfast dinette fitted with space-saving built-in appliances, an extra linen closet, and handsome columns that bespeak colonial elegance.
The garage has been turned around to hide its door. Central heating and air conditioning equipment is located in an inside utility room.
The restful atmosphere of this home is enhanced by the lighting which can be brightened or dimmed to any level by Luxtrol light control. The living room, recreation room, dining room and three bedrooms are Luxtrol equipped. In the bedrooms, lighted valances can be dimmed to push the walls and the cares of the world a hundred miles away or they can be brightened for a brisk, cheery atmosphere.
The dining chandelier can be dimmed to candleglow, making every dinner a festive occasion with low lights to stimulate appetites and good cheer.
Just the right amount of dim light for comfortably watching TV can be selected in the living and recreation rooms. Or they can be brightened for reading, sewing or entertaining. An economical dim night light can be left burning all night long for safety and to discourage prowlers, because Luxtrol saves electricity when it dims the light.
Blueprints for the Aristocrat made from Architect's working drawings are available at $20 for one set, $5 each additional set. They include outline specifications and a lumber list, enabling you to obtain contractor's bids, arrange a mortgage, and build. Write to Associated Plan Service Inc., Box 305, Huntington, L. L., N.Y.

Summer Care For Attractive Lawns
Summer is the hardest time for lawns. They get greater use and more abuse than at any other time. The secret of attractive lawns is simple regular care to keep grass growing well.
Proper mowing is a major factor. Too often, mowing is a rushed routine that does more harm than good. Warm weather calls for adjustment in cutting height and frequency.
Frequency of mowing should be determined by the growth rate. You'll need fewer mowings in hot dry weather.
When summer heat begins to wilt you, grass is wilting too. Don't cut lawns in the baking sun. Wait until late afternoon to prevent moisture loss and scorched grass.
Never remove more than one-third of the leaf area at one time. The leaf blade acts as a stomach burning types of plant food promotes deeper roots, which find moisture easier.
In summer, let clippings lie. They add mulch to hold moisture and also yield organic matter to improve soil.

Never remove more than one-third of the leaf area at one time. The leaf blade acts as a stomach for the grass. It converts raw materials into plant tissue. Constant close mowing reduces the leaf's food building surface and sets grass back. On uneven ground, raise your cut to avoid scalping the lawn.
Letting grass grow taller in summer has advantages. First, the soil is shaded and water loss reduced. Also, there's less work for you.
Water is important. When it's dry, apply at least an inch of water to soak soil four inches or more deep. Merely sprinkling encourages shallow-rooted weeds.

3. Keep Fuchsias and Begonias in full bloom with frequent feedings. Every other week is not too much for these.
4. A plant's purpose is to bloom and set seed so as to propagate itself. Keep the blooms picked and most plants will keep trying by growing more flowers.
5. Replace fading annuals as soon as they fail to carry their color load. No need waiting to the very last bloom.
