Judges Award Art Sweepstake Prize For Oil Landscape
The long list of prize winners at the Orange County Fair began to shape up today with announcement of winners in the first judging—the fine arts department, which was judged Sunday.
Robert Martin of 2945 Andros, Costa Mesa, swept the fair's art show, winning the sweepstakes (best of show), two first-place prizes and a second-place award.
Martin's landscape entry painted in oils, "Red Gables," won first place in its category and also was named sweepstakes winner for the show. The general public will have an opportunity to concur with the judges or pick another popular sweepstakes winner by voting on the paintings during the fair. The fair runs through Sunday, July 17, and popular voting will continue at the art show through Saturday.
The sweepstakes winner is a study of an old red barn and a small farmhouse in the shadows of tall evergreen trees. The entire scene is set in wintertime and roofs; fences and trees are laden with snow.
Awards were made for traditional oils, watercolors, charcoal, pen and pencil, pastels and abstract. More than 150 entries in the show were sifted to arrive at the winners. The show will be "hung" throughout the fair and will be on view daily.

The North Orange County YMCA Building Drive passed the $200,000 mark at last Saturday's report meeting according to an announcement made by Joe W. Johnson, general campaign chairman. Workers reported a total of 886 subscriptions totaling $201,845.
Last Saturday, the Contractor's Division under Al Bergum reported $2,045 and Claud Sympson's Industry Division reported $2,550.
In making the announcement, Johnson urged the nearly 1000 solicitors to complete their prospect cards this week. With nearly 3000 prospect cards still unreported, Johnson said the campaign goal of $350,000 could be reached by the Victory Dinner on July 14, 1960.

Motorists Warned To Look Out for Deer
With the vacation season well underway and thousands of motorists taking to the road in California, the Department of Fish and Game asked that drivers be especially careful of deer on the roads.
Spokesmen for the Department pointed out that 4,679 deer were reported killed by vehicles last year, with the largest numbers killed in the months of July, August, September, October and November. In October of 1959, 770 deer were road-killed.
Most deer are hit at night when vehicle headlights blind and confuse them.
Signs have been posted on many highways in deer areas, cautioning motorists to watch out for the animals. It would appear that little heed is paid to the signs, even thought there are many instances of motorists being killed or severely injured in collisions with deer. The trend to smaller cars has increased this hazard to the motorist.
Deer are not the only highway casualties. Several bear, elk and antelope were road-killed last year in California, along with countless thousands of rabbits, pheasants and other small game species.

World’s Biggest City
There is a surprising front runner among the world's most populous cities. For years the honor was accorded to London on New York. Now it appears that Tokyo may deserve this honor. A United Press correspondent reports that it now has 10 million inhabitants. New York City may have eight million, and London seven million if its metropolitan area is included.
A real rival of Tokyo is Shanghai, whose population in 1957 was estimated at well over six million and which, like all Chinese cities, is growing rapidly. At last accounts Moscow was just under the eight million mark. Though India has a teeming population, her two largest cities, Calcutta and Bombay, do not exceed three million.
Thus, except for Moscow, the Far East appears to lead in the big city race. Considering the way the population leaps forward in that part of the world, the Orient may soon have both the first and second largest cities on earth.

"The Things Which God Hath Prepared For Them That Love Him" 1 Corinthians 2:29
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
That God, the Creator, should love men, His creation, is indeed assuring, but that He should be especially concerned that men love Him, is above all ease, challenging to each of us. True love is a mutual existence between those who possess its capabilities. That there can be love between God and man borne out by revelation of God's Word and by human experience. Our text says that God has pre-created certain things for them who love Him and yet the Scriptures elsewhere declare that "we love Him, because He first loved us; then gives us the key to the unlocking of the meaning of our text."
The words of the text have become precious to the saints of all ages from the time they were written until now. Many have suggested that they refer conclusively to the things which pertain to heaven and the future life of the child of God. Certainly these future "things" are included in the reference, but as we study the context of the passage carefully, these things but rather include all the things which we understand that the reference is not alone to certain to man's redemption. In the thirtieth verse of the first chapter we are instructed that of God, Jesus Christ is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Carefully noting these four things, we observe that we have a full provision whereby we, by wisdom of Christ, perceive the truths of God's plan of redemption; by the righteousness of Christ; are filled for the reception of redemption; by the santification of Christ; are declared members of God's family through adoption; and by the redemption which is in Christ, enter into the fulfilment of the eternal verities of our salvation. All of this other in verse fourteen that "the natural man receiveseth not the things of the Spirit of God." Therefore, we conclude, that salvation, heaven, eternal life and human understanding. How then is it to be understood? Two things are to be noted: these things are all that is involved in our redemption is beyond revealed alone by the Spirit or God and can be accepted or understood alone by faith. Notice the words of the context. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit," verse 10; "now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God," verse 12 and "the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God; for then his foolishness unto him, neither can he know them for they are spiritually discerned" verse 14. We ought therefore not to be alarmed when scholarly man of high educational attainment ridicule and very often deny the truths of the Word of God and their viewspoints are to be respected as relating to society and to the material things of this universe, yet they can know nothing of the realities of redemption, apart from Spirit revelation. For this reason God says "not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called." I Corinthians 1:26.
III. Why God Has Chosen This Method.
Apparently there are at least three reasons why God has seen fit in his divine providence and perrogate to use this method to refleal and cause to be understood the truths of his redemption: "What no flesh should give in his presence unto him, that he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord;" chapter 1:29, 31. That man is so prone to boast of his accomplishments has been seen and proven so often in our own day, that it
