IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! VISIT THESE FIRMS THIS WEEK B4-Anaheim Gazette (Anaheim, Thursday, July 14, 1960) Hi-Y Members Present $200 Check To Local YMCA Buildng Fund Campaign With a prediction of victory in the North Orange County YMCA Building Fund Drive, Chairman Joe Johnson accepted a check for $200 from Hi-Y members today. Dan Gibbs, president of the Inter-Club Hi-Y Council for the entire North Orange County district, presented the check to Johnson on behalf of the more than 100 high school youths. Johnson explained that subscriptions now exceed $201,785 in the drive for $350,000 to "Build a Home" for the YMCA. He said there are still more than 3,000 subscriptions as yet un-reported. Figuring on the basis of the number of cards in, the drive could well exceed the goal by the July 14th deadline. “There are now nearly 1,000 so-licitors with uncompleted subscription cards,” Johnson declared. “When these cards are in, we will be over the top, juding from past indications,’ he said. ‘We must have all cards in by July 14th, now set as an absolute deadline,’ he said... Any gardener who has been bitten by the "violet" can tell you why growing these plants is such a rewarding hobby. Their flowers come in white or variegated as well as many shades of purple, pink; and their fuzzy, heart-shaped leaves grow in rosettes. New developments are constantly being offered. Prepared potting soil mixes are available at nurseries. Clobber Weeds Early Here's a tip on clobbering weeds in new lawns. After you've prepared the seed bed—just before you get ready to broadcast the seed—water heavily and leave the future lawn site alone for about ten days to two weeks. During this warm weather you can expect weed seeds to germinate fast. Then is the time to hit them with one of the weed-killing sprays so that they can be knocked out before they have a chance to come up in the lawn. Wait another week, and then sow your seed. This lets your brand new lawn off to a good weed-free start. Much easier than getting down on your prayer bones and pulling out pesky dandelions and others of this ilk by hand. Mulberry Provides Nice Shade Trees Now that summer is here, you may find that you could use another shade tree for greater comfort in the garden. Mulberry is fine for rapid growth in producing nice shade. Its rich, shiny leaves (with no messy fruit) offer a welcome respite from the sun. One of the dressy, unusual eucalyptus such as the dollar-leaf variety is also an excellent shade-producer. Check your nursery for these and many other shade trees which will spread their boughs to make your summertime outdoor living more enjoyable.
