Swiss Care In Mid-Air
It was midnight when the phone rang. Mrs. Carter, a Swiss girl who'd married an American, was keeping vigil at her husband's bedside. He was a construction engineer, who'd fallen from a scaffolding, breaking both legs.
"Switzerland calling" announced the operator; and then: "This is Marianne" said Mrs. Carter's sister. "Mother's dangerously ill. She keeps asking for you and the children. Can you come?"
Mrs. Carter explained about her husband's accident. "Then send the children," insisted Marianne.
"The they can't travel alone. Tommy's not six months old, and Sheila's barely five." The conversation stalemated.
The next day Mrs. Carter recounted her predicament to a next door neighbor. "Why don't you talk to Hans Seller? He works for Swiss Air Line. May he be can suggest something."
Seiler was assurance personified. He discussed fares, inoculations, baby foods, sleeping habits and having the children met at the other end. He concluded, "Don't worry, Unescorted children often fly with us."
When Tommy and Sheila Carter reached Idlewild Airport, Louise Fritz, one of the pretty multi-lingual flight hosts,
Soon all three were firm friends, and little Sheila was ready for the big adventure. "She doesn't seem at all sorry to be leaving me," sighed Mrs. Carter as she watched them going on board. That night, Louise brought them their dinner early, chattering to the little girl and eventually putting her brother to bed in his special baby basket.
Amongst the passengers was a French magazine photographer. "Would you take some pictures of the children?" Louise asked him. "They're traveling alone, and I'd like to do this for their parents." The man agreed and the pictures were developed in Zurich. The next day, Louise put them on another Swissair flight, and soon they were in

Get Firm Grip on Nerves and Wheel For City Driving
What's so confusing about city traffic to the non-city driver?
"Chiefly — more traffic," is the answer given by the National Safety Council.
The Council listed other causes of driver confusion in city traffic:
Hundreds of signs here, there and everywhere: Do Not Enter, One Way, Turn Left from Left of Island on Green Arrow Only, Yield Right-of-Way to Pedestrians.
An upsetting collection of noises—roaring buses, blaring horns, shrill policemen's whistles.
"It's enough to make the visitor from the rural area give up and head for home," commented the Council.
While the age-old picture of the rural resident certainly is outdated, said the Council, city driving can be terrifying and hazardous to people from farms and small communities—and to city folks as well.
"It's largely psychological, of course," observed the Council.
"City driving, for the inexperienced, is pretty grim business," it said.
"Rule No. 1 is—don't panic!"
"Get a firm grip on your nerves. Decide that no matter what happens, you're going to stay calm."
The second rule, said the Council, is be alert for pedestrians, especially in the middle of the next door neighbor. "Why don't you talk to Hans Seller? He works for Swiss Air Line. Maybe he can suggest something."
Seiler was assurance personified. He discussed fares, inoculations, baby foods, sleeping habits and having the children met at the other end. He concluded, "Don't worry, Unescorted children often fly with us."
When Tommy and Sheila Carter reached Idlewild Airport, Louise Fritz, one of the pretty multi-lingual flight hostesses, was on hand to greet them. "I thought the children and I should get thoroughly acquainted before take-off," she explained to their mother.
Louise brought them their dinner early, chattering to the little girl and eventually putting her brother to bed in his special baby basket.
Amongst the passengers was a French magazine photographer. "Would you take some pictures of the children?" Louise asked him. "They're traveling alone, and I'd like to do this for their parents." The man agreed and the pictures were developed in Zurich. The next day, Louise put them on another Swissair flight, and soon they were in Mrs. Carter's hands.
A week later, she received the following cable from Switzerland: "Mother recovering rapidly Marianne."

All plant, labor, services, materials and equipment, and all utilities and transportation offices, factories and water, and performing all work necessary to construct and complete in a good and workmanlike manner, in strict accordance with the specifications, plans and drawings thereof on file in the office of the City Engineer or City Clerk of the City Anahiem, the following public improvement: co-wit; The Improvement of Harbor Boulevard, from Katella Avenue to Chapman Avenue, in the City of Anaheim, by grading, paving and all appurtenant work, as more particularly set forth in the plans and specifications on file in the Office of the City Clerk or City Engineer, and shall be tabulated by the City Engineer and the result thereof reported to the City Council at its next regular or adjourned regular meeting, for action theron by said City Council.
PURSUANT to the provisions of Section 174 of the Labor Code, the City Council of the City Anahiem has ascertained the general prevailing rate of wages in the locality in which this type of work is to be performed for each type of workman needed to execute this contract. The hourly wage scale so ascertained is as follows:
Classification Hourly Rate Small Plant Fireman $3.61 Medium Plant Engineer $3.91 Large Plant Engineer $4.31
The successful bidder and contractor and contractors by him in the performance of public improvement will be used only such manufacturer.
“It’s largely psychological, of course,” observed the Council.
“City driving, for the inexperienced, is pretty grim business,” it said.
“Rule No. 1 is—don’t panic!
‘Get a firm griup on your nerves. Decide that no matter what happens, you’re going to stay calm.’
The second rule, said the Council, is be alert for pedestrians, especially in the middle of the block. Pedestrians may dash from the curb without warning. Give them the right-of-way. Wait for them even though hornhonkers behind you become impatient.
Other National Safety Council tips to help the person not accustomed to city driving:
1. Don’t follow the car ahead too closely.
2. Don’t make sudden movements or changes of direction. Stay in one lane.
3. Keep your eyes peeled on what’s going on around you. Keep checking the rear view mirror. It can warn you of a situation developing which may involve you.
4. Keep in mind that busy, multi-lane boulevards probably are safer than narrower streets.
5. Don’t rubberneck and drive at the same time. Park if you want to look at something.
6. Watch out for suddenly opening doors while driving alongside parked cars. Even in residential areas, you may find the streets solidly lined with parked cars—so beware of children darting into the street.
7. Remember — to turn left from a one-way street it’s necessary to be in the far left lane. And passing on the right is permitted in multi-lane traffic moving in one direction. So watch out for cars overtaking you on the right.”
