Anaheim Gazette-B3 (Anaheim, Thursday, June 23, 1960) LOOK! MODERN You Can Have a S. A. City Manager Raps Supervisors For Not Consulting Municipalities on Plan Santa Ana City Manager Carl Thornton got some action going when he complained that the Supervisors were keeping airport expansion plans under cover. Crux of the potential dispute appears to be possible use of the field by jet aircraft. The County is seeking realignment of MacArthur Blvd. so the runway can be extended to 5,800 feet and have repeatedly stated that this will not be long enough to allow it to be used by large jet aircraft. "This doesn't take into account that jets are already operating from an airport with a 5,800 run-preclude the use of the field by such big jet aircraft as the DC- and the Boeing 707, but has not ruled out its use by smaller jet aircraft. "We don't plan to develop the airport as an international airport, but that doesn't eliminate the possibility of the short-range jet transports such as prop-jet planes could fly from the field. "Even with the short-range jets, however, the plans call for canting the runway to the north to put take-offs over the Upper Newport Bay and away from housing." Ooops, Trere Goes Farm Land Here Will Continue To Shrink, Disappear Orange County's agricultural empire already on the wane — will continue to shrink. The State Department of Water Resources predicts the total land under cultivation in the county will be but 900 acres by the year 2010. Currently there are 86,000 acres of irrigated crop land in Orange County and it will dwindle away at the following rate: 53,000 in 1970, 18,200—1980, 11,000—1990 Crux of the potential dispute appears to be possible use of the field by jet aircraft. The County is seeking realignment of MacArthur Blvd. so the runway can be extended to 5,800 feet and have repeatedly stated that this will not be long enough to allow it to be used by large jet aircraft. “This doesn’t take into account that jets are already operating from an airport with a 5,800 runway and that there are at least four other types of jets which could land and take off from a 5,800 foot runway.” Thornton said Santa Ana would resist any realignment of MacArthur Blvd. which would interfere with the traffic flow into Santa Ana. Thornton said that although the County is apparently planning to expand the airport runway, no official has contacted Santa Ana on the project. “The airport isn’t any isolated thing,” warned Thornton. “It has a tremendous effect on every city in the area.” Supervisor William Phillips has pointed out that proposed plans “We don’t plan to develop the airport as an international airport, but that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of the short-range jet transports such as prop-jet planes could fly from the field. “Even with the short-range jets, however, the plans call for canting the runway to the north to put take-offs over the Upper Newport Bay and away from housing areas.” He said that even with the longer runway the danger around the airport will be considerably less than it is presently. State Authorizes Highway Improving The State Department of Public Works has approved a total of $162,342 for improvement of state highways in Orange County. The projects will include improvement of Placentia Ave., Cypress St. to Ball Rd. north of the Riverside Freeway.
