A Good Samaritan
Mrs. Robert Gallentene, a retired minister, doesn't wait to be called for help. She is always on the search for children who can use her aid. Fourteen years of helping needy youngsters is not always an easy road and sometimes proves thankless, but to her it has been a rewarding career.
Natives of Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Gallentene, 1204 S. Feather St., Anaheim, came to this area 36 years ago. The childless couple, on a vacation in Ensenada in 1946, picked up a pair of needy walsfs, fed and clothed them, and ever since have returned to Ensenada three times a year, once at Christmas time, with loads of clothes, toys and other articles to help those less fortunate.
ALL YEAR Mrs. Gallentene collects old dolls, clothes, drapes, shoes and anything that can be mended or repaired or can be cut up and sewn into new creations for children.
This work has not been confined to help only those below the border. She has worked (always alone) to make new things for hospitals here and for children in need wherever they are, regardless of race or creed.
Once during a hurricane in the Baja California area the couple loaded up a trailer with canned and powdered milk for the stricken families. One of their main assists has come from Jack Plantz, Long Beach trailer rental service, who has supplied the Gallentene's with all the trailers they need to make their long or short hauls.
Now starting on the 15th year, Mrs. Gallentene said she needs yarns, yardage, clothes and toys. "But no money," she said. If at
Fremont PTA Board Installation Held
The outgoing Executive Board of Fremont Parent-Teacher Association held a delicious potluck luncheon at Pearson Park on Monday, June 6th in honor of the new board members for 1960-61. Mrs. Don Burton, past president, was in charge of arrangements and very ably assisted by Mrs. Russell Renner, Mrs. Louis Wentz, Mrs. Carl Reeske and Mrs. Glendale Robinson.
Honored guests at the luncheon included Principal and Mrs. O. G. Thomason; Kenneth Spencer, attendance counselor; Lloyd Seeman, vice principal; Mrs. Bob Williams, vice principal, and Mrs. Martha Neff, school nurse. Other guests were Superintendent and Mrs. Paul Cook and school trustees and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Shroeder, Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Heuler and Mr. and Mrs. Don Langson.
School Maintenance Group Hold Meeting
Directors of School Maintenance and Operations in Orange County schools held their monthly meeting on June 14, at 6:30 p.m., at Chungking Cafe, 327 E. Center St. in Anaheim.
Herbert Bass, Centralia district; Charles Stanley, Fullerton elementary, and Cleo Mossman, Magnolia district, and two other supervisors answered questions pertaining to maintenance and operations.
SHE WASHES, irons and mends all the materials and this year her husband bought her a new automatic sewing machine, one of her greatest prides.
In her files are dozens of letters from hospitals, organizations and individual people thanking her for help. But sometimes things can happen to bring fire to her New England eyes.
Some time ago, she relates, she read of the migrant workers in the Fresno area undergoing severe hardships during a tough winter. She wrote to the Fresno authorities of her work, she said she had the time and would like to bring some clothes and badly needed supplies to these people. Her letter was turned over to the State Department and back came a terse reply that she would be required to have at least two years of college training before her help could be accepted. Mrs. Gallentene grinds her teeth on that one.
"By the way, if you ever hear of anyone who doesn't know what to do with their time," she said, "send them to me."
