All agencies capable of being served by the proposed facilities should be contacted officially and encouraged to participate in the project with final decisions to be made prior to Dec. 31, 1960. (That's the deadline established by MWD for accepting its offer to contribute $7.5 million. The funds wouldn't be available until the summer of 1962, but preliminary work could proceed.) 5. OCMWD should consider assisting independent water agencies in the Tustin area in forming an overlying district for financing purposes. 6. All Orange County water agencies should be urged to satisfy water needs directly from MWD facilities, as far as reasonably possible, in order to safeguard the underground water supply. YOUR LEGISLATOR AT WORK SENATOR JOHN A MURDY, JR. State Senator As yet, not many Californians are sufficiently aware of the basic importance of the Delta Area to successful operation of the projected statewide water system. As now planned, the complex network of waterways and fertile islands which make up the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers will be transformed by massive engineering into the "Delta Pool," to receive, store, and transmit water from the Feather River and associated projects to the southern and western parts of the state. At our recent special session the Assembly adopted a resolution which called the Delta Pool the 'heart of the water transportation facilities' the state will construct, and which authorized an extensive study of plans for the Pool, its operation, finance, and related problems. This study was assigned to the Assembly interim committee on water, and the group has just wound up the first of a series of hearings on the matter. Prior to the hearing, committee members made a tour of the area to familiarize themselves with its physical features. Before proceeding to matters discussed at the hearings, it might be helpful to describe the Delta Area briefly. Instead of one flowing directly into the other as is usual, we will present them in a more accessible format. Marywood Continued from Page 1.A and carry a spray of red flies and red bows. BIRTHS Members of Anaheim Girl Scout Troop No. 74, fifth-graders from the John Marshall School, held their first Court of Awards at the fire ring of the Corral Shopping Center on May 24. The girls' first experience with badge work has been very successful for every girl received at least on badge. Most girls have touched on other badges which they will complete next fall. Ceremonies started at 7:30 p.m. and were planned entirely by the girls. Families of the troops members and other interested Scouts attended. IN ADDITION to their badges, the girls received their Second Class Rank and the World Association pins which they have earned since fall. Members of Troop No. 74 are: Betty Allison, Kathy Anderson, Kathy Brown, Tawn Burton, Judy Canaday, Becky Chamberlain, Dianna Cliff, Caroline Enos, Suzanne Fein, Carol Fischer, Caroline Fischer, Susan Fraser, Laurie Gaza, Wendy Herrick, Susan Lampert, Jennifer Muir, Susan Isell, Kathy Newman, Linda Persico, Nancy Ronald, Judy Roobian, Chris Scholl, Laurel Trowbridge, Chris Webb, Kathy Wells, Holly West, Carol Wilson and Debra Wooley. Mrs. Fred Iseli and Mrs. L. Roobian lead the troop. Priscilla Sternard Pomona Graduate Priscilla Sternad of Anaheim is among 226 candidates for bachelor of arts degrees at Pomona College's 67th commencement in Bridges Auditorium in Claremont, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12. Miss Sternad, daughter of Mrs. Virginia Sternad, 112 W. Broadway, Anaheim, is a 1956 graduate of Redondo Union High School where she was a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the junior and senior women's honorary societies. Before proceeding to matters discussed at the hearings, it might be helpful to describe the Delta Area briefly. Instead of one flowing directly into the other as is usually the case, the Sacramento and the San Joaquin Rivers divide into numerous separate channels, which eventually unite in such a way that the waters of the two rivers gradually commingle. The multitude of islands within the channel network are mostly beolw sea-level, but are extraordinarily fertile and productive. However, their soil is frequently peaty, and this condition creates extensive problems of water seepage into farm land, subsidence of land surfaces, and infiltration of salt water. All of these factorors must be taken into account in planning for the Pool and its structures. Another problem which is also troublesome is of a slightly different character. It arises from the fact that release of wastes into the San Joaquin and its tributaries reduces the quality of delta water. To stop this, it will be necessary to construct a sizeable San Joaquin drainage system, properly tied into the Delta Pool and the statewide water plans. At its hearing, pjreliminary information was given to the committee as to the estimated costs of theDelta project. Total costs are now fixed at approximately $83 million, to be financed from the proceeds of the $1.75 billion bond issue which will appear on the November ballot. Preliminary data as to estimated revenues, allocation of costs between various types of users, and the price of Delta water, were also reviewed. The Committee was informed that the construction of the Delta Pool must be integrated with that of other features of the whole statewide system. If the project is authorized, and if properly coordinated arrangements can be worked out with local agencies and interests, it is anticipated that construction would extend on water, and the group has just wound up the first of a series of hearings on the matter. Prior to the hearing, committee members madea tour of the area to familiarize themselves with its physical features. Frick Wampler of Garden Oval for music. Terese Nelson will be given a certificate merit from the National Scholarship Corporation. Broadway, Anaheim ONE KE 5-4105 EXPLAINED why local orchists will be able to buy city-controlled Mohawk gas that savings of from 2c to 6c a month. Mohawk," he said, "is an independent California company. I am the word independent because that is the key to our economy of operation. We have our wells and refinery; we transport our own product. Our staff are wholly-owned by the company, and staffed with our trained employees. All of this up to an efficiency of proton and operation — which saves savings that can be passed on the public." He stressed that this type of station also insures quality oil. We can guarantee," he added, "every gallon of gasoline you will be exactly the same quality and a true reflection of the rate ratings on the pump. The stations also have quality oil, but they can't give you same economy. Other independents sell below major prices, but very few can control their effect from oil well to the tank our car." HILGENFELD MORTUARY celebrated its 52nd birthday on May 13 of this year. Miss Sternad, daughter of Mrs. Virginia Sternad, 112 W. Broadway, Anaheim, is a 1956 graduate of Redondo Union High School where she was a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the junior and senior women's honorary societies. A sociology major at Pomona, she has been the manager of the women's swim team, publicity chairman of the sophomore class, and on the elections committee. She is planning to further her studies in the field of sociology at the University of California at Berkeley, to work toward a career as a social welfare worker. J. Richards Elected Woodmen Delegate Mr. James Richards, of Anaheim, past commander of the Orange Lodge of the Woodmen of the World, a fraternal benefit society, was recently honored by his fellow members of this society by electing him as one of four delegates from this district to attend the organization's national convention to be held on June 13, 14 and 15 in St. Catherine Hotel, Avalon, Catalina Island. Two hundred fifty delegates and their families will attend this session, arriving from the various districts in the nine western states in which this society operates. Its head office is in Denver, Colorado. The Navy Nurse Corps celebrated its 52nd birthday on May 13 of this year. The Committee was informed that the construction of the Delta Pool must be integrated with that of other features of the whole statewide system. If the project is authorized, and if properly coordinated arrangements can be worked out with local agencies and interests, it is anticipated that construction would extend over the 20 year period from 1962 through 1982. Another important matter touched upon was the amount of usable water which will be salvaged if the Pool structures are engineered to present plans. Earlier estimates were that some 937,000 acre feet per year, a very considerable increase. Later meetings of the committee will receive testimony from interested local agencies as well as additional information on the points I have referred to here. From what I have written, it should be obvious that the Delta Pool will be an important topic at our 1961 session.
