His name isn't Tommy but he Father's Day 3,000 County Boys Really Need ‘Someone’ Who Cares Tommy really exists. His name isn't Tommy but he lives somewhere in Orange County. His mother must work and he is the man of the family at age eight. Tommy also has a four-year-old sister at home. He attends third grade, is exactly 4 feet high, weighs 55 lbs. and wears glasses. Tommy’s mother sought out Big Brothers as a possible solution to problems with her son. He spent his time almost as a fixture in front of the television set. He seemed to have no interests. He attended school only because he had to. Discipline came frequently. His grades were poor and he had few friends. His yearning for attention often landed him in trouble both at school and at home. Tommy wanted to join the Indian Guides, but his father was gone, a fact his schoolmates would not let him forget. TOMMY STATED bluntly that he was not sure his mother loved him, and that his father had deserted him. He said that if his father would come back he would still love him. He cried, and said that if only his Daddy and his Mother would live together again, he would be happy. He said that he was unable to hit or catch a ball very well, and if he tried, the boys he was playing with would laugh at him, and he guessed he just wasn't good at anything. Tommy has now had the guidance of his Big Brother less than six months. His growing-up problems are just beginning but he is learning to face them. He and his Big Brother are active in “Y” Indian Guides which Tommy looks forward to with a great deal of enthusiasm. Tommy has the ability to do honor work, but has not yet reached this goal. His attitude toward his teacher seems to be one of optimism and acceptance now. He will pass this year at school. Tommy is gradually feeling his way along toward participating in group activities. He practices catching and hitting baseball whenever the Big Brother suggests it, and is doing well in swimming, which he has approached with enthusiasm. The Big Brother has encouraged Tommy to attend Sunday School, which he does regularly. The big event of the week in his life is the afternoon that he spends with this man who is giving him his time without strings. He is looking forward to a summer of working and being with his Big Brother. They have already planned a camping trip. There are still problems to be solved with Tommy. He cannot yet accept the competition of another child for the Big Brother’s time, teamwork is difficult for him and he is very sensitive about his glasses. Time and understanding on the part of the Big Brother can help him overcome these feelings. Tommy has become He is looking forward to a summer of working and being with his Big Brother. Tommy has become convinced that this Big Brother holds him in high esteem and is no longer afraid that he will leave him as his father did. This case is an ideal pattern of how a boy will seek acceptance and follow the example of a man who is genuinely interested in him. Tommy is not his real name but there are more than 3,000 “Tommys” in Orange County. GIVE YOURSELF A FATHER’S DAY PRESENT: SUHPORT THE BIG BROTHER MOVEMENT. For information call KImberly 2-7121.
