Editor's Note: This is a new feature of the Anaheim Gazette—a department open to the artistic and intellectual expressions of the readers. The following poem was written by Ida M. Rannow, 1525 S. Euclid Ave.
MOTHER
Mother, the name that charms our fear,
That soothes our hurts like they were not,
That scatter shadows far and near
From elder to the tiny tot.
When coming clouds around us start,
And block your vision far and near,
The sunlight in a mother’s heart
Will supply all your love and cheer.
Some hefty load to bend our back,
Mother’s broad shoulders come in sight,
You’ll feel the tension growing slack,
Your burdens have just become light.
When our hearts imbedded in lead
And joy seemed something from the past,
Somehow to mother our path led
And here was found our peace at last.
Her two hands so willing to serve,
So capable and very strong,
Her steady and unshaken nerve
Is sure to right our every wrong.
Here is the spot where peace holds fort,
From mother’s soul, God made a throne,
For his great kingdom to hold court,
All recall days with her alone.
We’ve heard the word from her lips spill
From the abundance of her heart,
She tells the secret of God’s will,
Why Jesus on the cross took part.
Many mothers may claim no child,
Yet every child has a mother,
That seems the way our world is styled
And we can ask for no other.

ARID LANDS
Legislation affecting the construction of reservoirs in the West included the Carey Act of 1894, which authorized grants of public lands to the western states on condition that the land be irrigated. Progress in reclaiming arid land was slow, because the size and cost of many projects was beyond the resources of the State and private interests. Today, California’s Feather River Project is aiming more toward keeping present farmland in production than in developing arid lands.

Hornets Were 'Deep South' at Demo Convention
Fullerton Junior College presented the states of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, and Kentucky in the Mock Democratic National Convention held Saturday, April 23, at Los Angeles State College.
Fullerton JC, sending the largest delegation of any of the colleges and junior colleges participating, had approximately 180 students at the convention.
Six faculty advisers accompanied the FJC group: Dr. Joseph Philbrick, Dr. John Vloyantes, C. W. Hushaw, Frank Tyson, Dwayne Copp, and Russell Bryant.
In the mock convention students followed the procedure of national nominating speeches for all the major Democratic party candidates, demonstrations, and voting.
Prior to the convention, the FJC group also served on the party platform committee.
Most of the state delegations had written to the states they represented and accumulated files of material so as to be as well armed as possible with actual information.
