PICK LOVELIES FOR JULY 12-17 FAIR GROUNDS
14 Lassies Vie For Of County's Summer
The bevy of beauties from which the Pirate Queen, sovereign and symbol of the 1960 Orange County Fair, will be selected is almost complete today.
A dozen entries from as many communities around the county have signed up for the county's only "official" contest. The beauty trial is "official" because the Orange County Board of Supervisors has acted to designate the fair's Pirate Queen as the county's entry in the Maid of California Contest of the California State Fair.
Probably 14 local lovelies will vie for the Pirate Queen title. The winner, along with two princesses, will reign over the six-day county fair July 12 through 17.
JUDGES IMPORTED from out of the county will select the winners in a contest expected to be the highlight of opening night at the fair. Guest appearances of celebrities and special events arranged by the fair add to the colorful program which traditionally is held early in the evening of opening night at the amphitheater on the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Guest appearances of celebrities and special events arranged by the fair add to the colorful program which traditionally is held early in the evening of opening night at the amphitheater on the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
In the weeks preceding the contest queen candidates are feted at luncheons, featured in guest interviews on television shows, treated to special field trips to tourist attractions throughout the Southern California area and coached in grace, charm and makeup in preparation for the big night.
The Santa Ana studio of The Loretta Young Way this year will be in charge of selection of the contestants' official wardrobe for all appearances and will give each candidate a complete charm course prior to the television appearances and the contest.
MRS. DUANE VEDEL of Fullerton again will "mother" the queen contestants as official chaperone for the group. Don Bush, Newport Beach commercial photographer who is chief photographer for the fair, will be "producer" of the stunts for queen candidate TV appearances and will accompany the queens on field trips.
Entries already registered and the communities they represent are Lynne Davis of Santa Ana, Nancy Rains of Costa Mesa, Sonra Coontz of Newport Beach, Suzanne Herron of Los Alamitos, Sharin Hubbert of San Clemente, Linda French of Laguna Beach, Marcia Wells of Huntington Beach, Susan Moberly of Tustin, Kay Banasky of a Habra, Muffi Bula of Buena Park, Joanne Baker of Garden Grove and Anna Robinson of Westminster. Home At City Hall
Fullerton city administrator Hermann Hiltscher—in a manner of speaking—never left home to become a success.
Hiltscher’s office in City Hall rests squarely on the spot where he was born.
THE FAMILY HOMESTEAD, founded by his father August after he arrived in the Anaheim-Fullerton area from Austria in 1886, was razed in 1940 to construct the present Civic Center at the corner of Richmand and W. Commonwealth Aves.
Cancer Not Just a Scare
All the talk and publicity in the world can’t make Canmore real than when it strikes close to home.

1,036 persons will die of cancer in our county.

651 cancer patients will be saved.
Air-Space Experts
Hired for $30,000
A six-man team of air-space experts Monday afternoon recommended the extension of the Orange County Airport runway to 5,800 feet as it presented a one-hour and 40-minute interim report before county supervisors at the courthouse.
The current runway is 4,780 feet long and 150 feet wide.
The presentation was handled by representatives from Lockheed Air Terminal, Inc., Quinton Engineers, Ltd., and William L. Perreira and Associates. The three-unit air-space study was ordered by supervisors at a cost of $30,000.
Supervisor William Phillips, committeeman on airport affairs, pointed out that "this is strictly a preliminary report. It is most important, however, to get the information we need at this time."
