Anaheim Gazette-A5 (Anaheim, Thursday, May 5, 1940) WINGS 'N' SWINGS! 3 Marine Jets Converted Into City Playground Equipment Youngsters of Anaheim found something new and exciting in Roosevelt City Park this week, when Marine aircraft mechanics and painters from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station arrived at the park to complete the conversion of the newly acquired F9F-6P "Cougar" jet into a fascinating piece of playground equipment. The aircraft is one of three donated to the city by the Navy Department for display and playground use in each of Anaheim's three public parks. To enable children to climb to the cockpit of the jet fighter, the plane is positioned on steel beams embedded in concrete, and tilted so the right wing is near the ground. The engine has been removed and the inside fixed so youngsters can crawl through the intake openings to the exhaust opening, from ladders positiat each end. All parts of the aircraft daous to children have been remand several safety features ato ensure safe playing. When the Marine painters put the final touches on the tone gray aircraft, it will be original identification marking huge white letters—"Marines FMFPac." $100,000 Pool For Crippled Children Set It may look like the second monorail in Orange County—Disney has the first—and it will operate in somewhat that fashion—the conveyor system now being erected at the new therapeutic pool of Orange County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, When Senator John A. Murdy It may look like the second monorail in Orange County—Disney has the first—and it will operate in somewhat that fashion—the conveyor system now being erected at the new therapeutic pool of Orange County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. When Senator John A. Murdy Jr. and Frank V. Crane, co-chairmen of the Society's building fund, inspected progress of pool construction at the half-way point this week, they found the three upright supports of the conveyor already in place. Senator Murdy and Crane emphasized that Easter Seal contributions maintain and operate the $100,000 pool facility. They urged those who have not yet returned the Easter Seal envelopes mailed several weeks ago to send them in now. Those who may have lost their envelopes or did not receive any were asked to mail contributions to their local postmaster. There will be 150 crippled children admitted to the pool for treatments twice a week when it opens in July, said Robert L. Williams, executive director. Concrete work for the pool and connecting hydro-therapy building is virtually completed at the Society's rehabilitation center, 12612 S. Tustin Ave., Orange. Construction of the building is getting under way. The pool measures 30 by 60 feet, its depth ranging from 1½ feet at one end to 4½ feet in the center and 2½ feet at the other end. The conveyor will be used to hoist the more severely crippled patients or the heavier adults, or those in wheelchairs, transferring them from the hydro-therapy building into and out of the pool. The pool is the first unit of a planned half-million dollar rehabilitation center. Purchase of New High School Site Awaits Approval of Bond Request The Fullerton Union High School District has placed final documents in 30-day escrow for the purchase of a high school site in the Lowell-La Habra area, it was announced today by school officials. Located at the southeast corner of Ocean and First Avenues, the 40,488 acre site is being purchased from the Macco Corp. of Paramount at a price of $8,000 per acre. Logan W. Wheatley, assistant superintendent for the division of physical plant and facilities, said. SELECTION OF THE SITE was made more than two years ago following a careful study of anticipated growth in the northwest portion of the district. To protect constituents against possible increase in cost which might result from the improvement of surrounding property, the Board of Trustees on July 7, 1958, filed an action in eminent domain for the purchase of the property from the owner. As a result of this action, Wheatley pointed out, the $8,000 per acre land price is within the range of three appraisals of the value of the parcel made for the district in 1958. It is the present planning to complete the first unit of a new high school on this site by September of 1961 and architect for the proposed school is William H. Harrison, who designed Buena Park High School, La Habra High School, and Sunny Hills High School and has done work on the Fullerton Union High School campus. Though money for the purchase of the site is available from previous bond issues, funds for the development of the first unit of the new school to house approximately 1,200 students are included in the Fullerton Union High School District bond request which will be on the ballot at the school elections, May 3. No definite commitments for the construction of the new school can be made until these funds have been approved. Happiness has this advantage over great wealth—people don't try to borrow it.
