What's The 'Y' Anyway?
North County Launches
Drive For New Boys’ Center
Now that the drive is on to build facilities for the North Orange County YMCA, many questions are being asked about what the YMCA has done for the community, according to Leroy Hixson, General Secretary of the local group.
"I am a bit hesitant to go into the many sections of the American way of life that were invented, pioneered and developed by the YMCA for fear of being classified with the Kremlin," Hixon said.
"The Kremlin likes to claim all firsts with the possible exception of Democracy and as I put together the YMCA firsts, it begins ed their gyms or "Halls of Health" in 1869. In each development, the Y pioneered programming to help youngsters in areas never before explored. In the case of sports and body-building, the program filled the need of youngsters who had problems because of a lack of health or because of a lack of physical development.

"I am a bit hesitant to go into the many sections of the American way of life that were invented, pioneered and developed by the YMCA for fear of being classified with the Kremlin," Hixon said.
"The Kremlin likes to claim all firsts with the possible exception of Democracy and as I put together the YMCA firsts, it begins to shape up the same way," he declared.
He explained that among other programs developed by the "Y," is the Boy Scouts. Along with this development the Y founded Camp Fire Girls and sponsored the first Father's Day. Since then, of course, the Boy Scouts have become an international organization with their own program. The YMCA now has a similar program for boys and girls working complementary to scouting.
"Other firsts, he said, "includes water safety programs."
In 1906, the Y pioneered learn-to-swim campaigns and encouraged the Red Cross to join in this program. Where YMCA groups throughout the nation have facilities, they still continue this worthwhile program which no doubt saves in the sports field the Y invented basketball, volleyball and sponsored the world's first professional football team In 1856, the YMCA began the nation's first body building program and opened their gyms or "Halls of Health" in 1869. In each development, the Y pioneered programming to help youngsters in areas never before explored. In the case of sports and body-building, the program filled the need of youngsters who had problems because of a lack of health or because of a lack of physical development.
FOR OLDER YOUNGSTERS and for adults in area where youngsters were involved, the YMCA began their work to promote a shorter work week as far back as 1885. The YMCA pioneered night school education before 1900 and developed work-and-study plans now used in many colleges.
For our fighting men, the YMCA inaugurated prisoner-of-war aid in the Civil War. In World War I, the YMCA performed 90 percent of all American Expeditionary Forces welfare work. The YMCA operated 646 USO units in World War II to complement other services for the armed forces.
Other "firsts" that should be mentioned include the first organized boys camp in the nation. New York Camp Dudley was opened in 1885, as the first such facility in history. The Y also instituted the popular citizenship training program now so popular in 35 states in the country. The Youth in Government program was created by the YMCA in 1956.
THE VALUABLE father-son programs now so popular and valuable throughout the nation in many programs was inaugurated by YMCA in 1909. The Y-Indian Guide program now operates nearly 5,000 tribes. These special father and son clubs have been invaluable in dramatizing the value of fathers working and playing with their sons.
Each new program has developed as the result of the YMCA's constant research into the needs of youth. Where a lack is found in programming, a new area is developed to fill the need.
YMCA personnel throughout the nation are still in search of new programming to fill the needs of

"We have only clerical space in a rented home. We have had to operate with school, church and home facilities," he declared.
We have now obviously arrived at a stage of development where we must have a YMCA building and center in order to continue a minimal programming schedule. YMCA has a ways been an investment youth and has proven for many years of be a necessary part of the community.

Bldg. Permit Volume Down In Jan., Feb.
Southern California home-building declined in the first two months of 1960, the Security First National Bank's monthly summary of business conditions reported today.
In Anaheim, total valuation of building permits issued in 1958 reached 44,324, compared to 52,109 in 1959. Total number of dwelling units during 1958 was recorded at 3,678, compared to 4,386 for 1959.
Southern California home-building, halting a record breaking level enjoyed in 1959, was down 20 per cent during January and February, revealed the Security Bank researchers.
Total construction activity in the southern half of California has fallen off far less sharply than has residential building. During the first two months of 1960, volume has been at a seasonally adjusted annual rate equivalent of $3,205,000,000, with non-residential building and engineering construction both showing considerable strength.
This represent a decline of only 8 per cent from the average level during the record year of 1959 and is 6 per cent above the 1958 average level, according to Security Bank research staff.
