(Anaheim, Thurs., March 24, 1960) Anaheim Gazette-5 The Modern Farmers' Friend PRE-EMERGENCE HERBICIDES KILL WEEDS WHICH STEAL MOISTURE AND NUTRIENTS NEeded FOR HIGHEST CORN YIELDS. FARMERS NOT ONLY GET MORE BUSHELS OF CORN TO THE ACRE, BUT SAVE TIME AND LABOR. FOR A HERBICIDE COST EQUIVALENT TO THE PRICE OF 3 OR 4 BUSHELS OF CORN TO CONTROL BROADLEAF WEEDS AND GRASSES, YIELD INCREASES FROM 9 TO 16 BUSHELS PER ACRE HAVE BEEN OBTAINED; INCREASES FROM 25 TO 30 BUSHELS PER ACRE ARE NOT UNCOMMON AND IN SOME CASES UP TO 40 BUSHELS! SIMAZINE OR ATRAZINE APPLIED AT PLANTING TIME CONTROL GRASSES AND BROADLEAVED WEEDS IN THE CORNFIELD FOR AN ENTIRE SEASON. WEEDS DIE BEFORE OR JUST AFTER THEY BREAK GROUND. HERBICIDES WORK BY ABSORPTION THROUGH WEED ROOT SYSTEM, BUT ARE COMPLETELY HARMLESS TO CORN. ALSO SIMAZINE AND ATRAZINE ARE SAFE TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS, SAFE TO HANDLE BECAUSE THEY ARE NONIRRITATING TO SKIN. THERE IS NO HERBICIDE RESIDUE IN THE CORN CROP. THESE HERBICIDES WILL DELAY OR ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR DIFFICULT SLOW AND DAMAGING FIRST CULTIVATION-MAKING LABOR AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FOR OTHER SEASONAL FARM-OPERATIONS. THEY WILL ALSO CONTROL THE MID-SUMMER GERMINATING WEEDS THAT INTERFERE WITH CORN MATURITY, DRIVING AND PICKING. MAY BE APPLIED AS A BAND (SHOWN) OR BROADCAST TREATMENT. Miss Upp spoke at the business meeting of the Palm Lane Parent-Teacher Association, held at the school recently. "Child Art is extremely individual. One of the most important aims of art education is to bring out individual differences," she continued. She illustrated her talk by presenting paintings done by the children of Palm Lane to an appreciative audience of parents. Representative of the many forms of art created by the students were displays of crayon drawings, paintings, texture work and scissor craft. In behalf of the PTA, Mrs. William Herron, president, presented a transistor radio to the school for Civil Defense purposes. It was received by Mrs. Wilfred Edelbrock, principal. She also announced that the association had with 877 members the highest percentage of members in the Anaheim district. Mrs. William Lippold, nominating committee chairman, read the nominations for the 1960-61 term. Further nominations may be made from the floor at the election in April. Mrs. James King and Mrs. Richard McQue were elected delegate and alternate for the PTA State Convention to attend with the President-elect, Mr. Edelbrock, parliamentarian, read pro- FIREPLACE "SHOWPLACE" Winter or summer, a fireplace can be a showplace if it is framed with decorative ceramic tile, says the Ceramic Tile Institute.
