Giant County State College Building Sought; Facilities For 5,900 Students Orange County State College is continuing with its building program planning. Cently three building program documents, in skeleton form, have been transmitted to the College Facility Planning Office of the Division of State Colleges and Teacher Education of the State Department of Education in Sacramento. The three proposals contain the college's requirements for building to house music, speech and drama instruction, and a food service facility. THE REQUESTED physical education units consist of a gymnasium with a future seating capacity of 5000, shower and locker rooms for men and women, activity areas, lecture rooms and faculty offices. For aquatic activities two pools are requested, one for swimming instruction and competition, and one for diving. The outdoor facilities would require the use of approximately 28 acres and include a stadium seating 10,000 spectators for football and track, a regulation baseball diamond, two practice football fields and one practice baseball diamond. Other outdoor facilities requested include softball fields, all-purpose fields, basketball and volleyball courts, handball courts and tennis courts. The proposed music-speech-drama building would contain ten lecture rooms, ten activity rooms, seventy-one music and speech practice rooms, two large rehearsal halls for instrumental and vocal music, speech clinic and speech correction rooms, listening and SCIENCE IN YOUR LIFE Your Health Team Perhaps a member of your family, one of your friends—or even you are among the more than 3,000,000 Americans who are alive today because they were born at the right time. A time which saw the greatest and most rapid advance of medical science in our history. In little more than 20 years, the death rate in the United States has dropped by nearly one-fifth. And much of the credit for this impressive life-saving record goes to our all-American health team. This team is made up of devoted men and women from coast to coast who are banded together in a continuing battle against disease. Captain of the team, of course, is your doctor. He's on the front line of the fight for health. And he has better ammunition than ever before—better diagnostic measures, better surgical techniques, better methods of treatment and better drugs. Then there are these important members of the team you'll probably never meet: The research scientist. He may work in a hospital, a university, a foundation or in one of the scores of laboratories established by the private pharmaceutical companies. The pharmaceutical industry has played a major role in modern research, for out of the laboratories financed by private enterprise have come many of today's wonder drugs. 20,000 drug and related items. B when a pharmacist—or a hospice—needs some special item in hurry, drug wholesalers through the nation are ready to answer the call. Besides your doctor, there's another member of the health team that you do meet. He's your ph ALSO REQUESTED are a "theater-in-the-round," five hundred-seat little theater with full-rigged and stage and auxiliary facilities, and a recital hall seating three hundred persons. The food services building would provide seating for 1,030 individuals including main dining room, snack bar, faculty dining room, group dining rooms, kitchens and other food handling and preparation units. No estimate of the cost of the projects has been made. It is being requested that the projects be programmed for completion in the summer of 1964. The facilities are proposed in scope to be adequate for the 1967 projected enrollment of 5,900 full-time equivalent regular students. When completed they would supplement the all-purpose science-classroom-library-administration building being projected for completion 1963. In keeping with the previously adopted master-plan concept anticipating an ultimate college enrollment of 35,000 students, the buildings are requested to be feasible in terms of their functions, to be able to take additions easily and economically, and to be signed in height to the maximum air-conditioned. St. John resides in Downey with his wife and daughter. GAY TRAY A serving tray can be given an unusual touch by covering the surface with ceramic tile of a gay and picturesque design, the Ceramic Tile Institute reports. There is a wide variety of colors and motifs to choose from there is no danger of staining from spilled flds or liquids and such a tray is ideal for the sickroom because it is hospital sanitary. Rainbow Tints A Party Cake Here is a fine party cake of rainbow hue. It will make a hit with guests and family too. Nonfat milk in reliquised form adds an economical note while lowering the caloric count per portion. The trick is to delicately tint the batter. For special occasions use pastel shades of fresh flowers to decorate the cake plate. Rainbow Party Cake (Makes two 8-inch layers) ½ cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups sifted flour 1 tablespoon double acting baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup liquid Starlac Few drops each of yellow, green and red vegetable food coloring. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat until thoroughly blended. Sift together hour, baking powder and salt. Add to mixture alternately with Starlac; beat well after each addition. Divide batter into three equal portions. Tint one portion yellow; the second portion green and the third portion pink. Butter 8-inch layer pans. Place large spoonful of yellow batter in center of one pan. Spoon green batter around the yellow batter. Spoon pink batter around green batter. Reverse the order of placing colored batter in the second pan. Bake in a moderate oven (350° F.) 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched with finger. When cool frost with your favorite fluffy frosting. Industrial Employment Industrial Employment In Area Up 4 Per Cent Manufacturing employment in the Los Angeles metropolitan area (which includes Orange County) was up four per cent over February 1959, the state department of labor statistics has reported. About 75 per cent of the increase was reported in the durable goods industries, and 15,400 workers were added to labor rolls in the electronic and electrical equipment industries alone. Aviation manufacturing dropped 3,700 workers from last February. HAPPIER WASHDAYS The laundry room is no pleasure spot, but it doesn't have to suggest drudgery, says the Ceramic Tile Institute. It can be brightened up in many ways: better lighting, replacement or refinishing of worn equipment, a radio and the installation of colorful ceramic tile on the walls. If your car is in reasonably good resale condi SEE US TODAY FOR THE BEST DEAL IN WEEAR-ROUND FEATURE With the barbecue pit becoming almost year-round feature, it's smart idea to plan it for permeance, advises the Ceramic Tile Institute. One way of accomplish this is by using a positively resistant, non-staining material such as ceramic tile on the floors. Heat from simoldering coal cannot dull or damage finish. Soot can be whisked away with a damp cloth when festivities are over. SERVIOUS TILE In addition to its many other features, ceramic tile is particularly well suited for baths and swimming pools because it is immovable to body oils and chemicalatives in the water. RELAX! NO TRAFFIC PROBLEMS WHOPPING EXPENDITURE The nation's homeowners spend an estimated $15 billion annually to improve and upgrade their homes, according to official estimates. Much of this is used for creating new living space in older homes and upgrading present structures with such materials as ceramic floor and wall tiles in baths, kitchens and other key areas.
