Editorial Big Man Steps Down A big man in Anaheim’s past, present and future has retired. City Planning Director Bob Mungall, nearing 70, has given up the reins of directing the community’s phenomenal growth. Mungall was treated to a surprise party by city workers and officials last Thursday. He officially stepped down as planning director on Friday. The strapping, friendly Mungall, a native of Fall River, Mass., joined the Anaheim Planning Commission in 1946—three years after becoming a resident of Anaheim. At that time he was in charge of manufacturing and design for the Essex Wire Corp. Mungall quickly expanded his civic duties and joined the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce in 1957. He joined the city staff as planning engineer in 1949. Mungall's varied career was highlighted by four years in Russia. He was loaned by General Electric Co. to the International G. E. Co. in 1920 and spent four years in the USSR on engineering assignments. Mungall is a member of the American Society of Planning Engineers, the Free and Accepted Masons. Anaheim Lodge 207, the Royal Arch Masons, Chapter 125 and Malakah Shrine Temple. Working with Mungall has been a rare privilege. His cooperative nature and forthrightness has made his office one of the most accessible to community newspapermen of all official balliwicks. It will take a big man to fill his shoes.
