Instrumental Play Begins at Parks
Backboards and backtop at 19 Anaheim Park and Recreation department playgrounds will swing into action this week with the opening of the intramural basketball programs at all after-school recreation areas.
Following a successful Christmas vacation program of free-throw tournaments and 2-man leagues, the playgrounds will begin inter-school competition at the intramural level this year instead of traveling squads.
Recreation leaders on duty are scheduled to hold many practice sessions to sharpen the boys' skills and at the close of the season an all-city tournament will pit the top intramural squads from each area against one another.
A full program of other athletic events is regularly available to youngsters at any of the Anaheim Park and Recreation department playgrounds.
The areas are open daily after school from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New Publication At Fullerton JC
The first semester edition of the "Torch," a unique documentary type publication that reviews the college year at Fullerton Junior College in two installments, met its final deadline this week and will be distributed on the college campus during the week of Jan. 25.
This semester's "Torch" is being edited by Donna Milnes of Fullerton, with Joe Tatar of Whittier serving as photo editor, Monty Clark of Garden Grove as sports editor, Kathy Reho of Fullerton as copy editor, and Lois Wenholz of Anaheim as clubs editor.
THE UNUSUAL "semi-annual" concept is now in its second year at Fullerton JC.
Highlight features of this edition will include a "then and now" photo section comparing various phases of the college program as they were in the 1920s with the present time; a photo section showing faculty as they were when they were college students; and special features on various departments. A special plastic binder, large enough to hold up to five editions, will again be available to students.
Every student body card holder at the college receives both editions of the publication.

ballroom large enough for 5,000 persons.

5. A two-story structure that will contain 260 cabannas.
6. A Polynesian Room Supper Club for $306.
7. A clubhouse for the nine hole golf course.
A letter from Sennes, who did not make a personal appearance, was read. It assured the Council that the operator of the Moulin Rouge and Ciros in Hollywood was interested in only high-level entertainment.
WAGNER ALSO ASSURED the City Council that the selection of an operator for the development would be subject to Councilmanic approval. He said three of the nation’s “top hotel operators” have been approached.
Sennes said the entertainment will include aquacades, ice shows and musical programs. There will be no prize fights or wrestling matches, he said.
"While Anaheim is a long ways from being a ghost town," Sennes quipped, "I'll rout any spooks left in your vicinity."
ED ETTINGER, Disneyland public relations officer, was in the audience and said, following the meeting, that Disneyland planned no further protests.
Sennes and Wagner pointed out that the convention and entertainment center would augment Disneyland, keeping tourists and visitors in the city longer than they currently stay.

Average Anaheim Family Earned $5,195 in 1959
Anaheim bounced back from the 1957-58 recession with a boom.
Figures released for business activity during the first six months of 1959 gave this picture:
A city of 91,000 Anaheim cornered an unbelievable .06 per cent of the entire national spending dollar.
The aggregate fiscal year business rose to $128,624,000 as compared to $123,866,000 during the recession period.
Net income of Anaheim residents soared to an all-time high of $141,296,000, a per household equivalent of $5,195.
The survey was made by the Standard Rate and Data Service of New York.
'My Uncle' Due At Orange Theater
The next presentation of the Chapman College Great Films Guild will be the French comedy, "My Uncle," set for two 8 p.m. showings January 13 and 14 in Orange Theater.
A satire on life in the mechanized world of the twentieth century, the production was filmed in Eastman color under the Direction of Jacques Tati, who also wrote and stars in the movie.
Tati will be remembered for the popular "Mr. Hulot's Holiday," French film which he also wrote, directed, and starred in. In "My Uncle," he again appears as Mr. Hulot.
Winner of a special award by the International Film Critics at the Cannes Festival, "My Uncle" was named as the best foreign picture of the year by the New York Film Critics.
Learn to Pronounce What Ails You

Sharpen Tax Bite
The taxman may not have sharper eyesight in 1960, but he may have more men looking.
The County Assessor's office asked the Board of Supervisors to allow the hiring of 20 new appraisers to assist in taking the county's assessments for the 1960 tax rolls.
Children’s Hospital Sought for County
Financial spadework for a 200-bed Orange County Children's hospital will be started in March.
Proponents of the hospital said a fund drive to build a children's medical facility o nland adjacent to St. Joseph's hospital, Orange, will start at that time.
Immediate objective is a 60-bed hospital with a future expansion to 200 beds.
Rabbi Morton C. Fierman, a member of the proposed hospital's executive council, estimated that 300 Orange County youngsters must now travel to Los Angeles for treatment.
This is an increase of 2,600 industrial, retail and wholesale outlets over 1955.
The survey does not include many service and professional firms such as beauty parlors, barber shops, real estate brokers and security offices.
The gain for the state of 540,-100 during 1959 was produced in heart. Brown stated, by an excess of births over deaths of approximately 228,000 and the balance of approximately 312,000 resulted inbm the excess of in-migration over out-migration. During 1959, the average daily gain from natural increase was 625 and from net migration was 855 for a daily total average gain of 1,480, or roughly, 1,500 a day. With the ever larger population, the relatively high birth rate and the slowly declining death rate, natural increase will soon produce over 250,000 per year.
"While population growth is to be desired, it invariably brings demands for increased government expenditures. Education, welfare, hospitals, protection and probation — all place added tax burdens on the community. It becomes even more imperative that each tax dollar be wisely spent," the Cal-Tax article concluded.
