Volunteer Researchers Sought For Orange County Survey
Volunteer researchers are being sought throughout Orange County to take part in the most monumental medical survey in history.
These volunteer workers for the American Cancer Society's nationwide, 6-year Living Habits Study will be instrumental in getting vital information to help fight the baffling and dread disease of cancer.
The study, headed in Orange County by Dr. Bernard M. Davis, Jr., of Anaheim, will begin in January. It will not involve a medical examination nor interviews. Distribution of confidential questionnaires will be completed during a 2-week period, following a training period for volunteer researchers in the first weeks of January.
Volunteer researchers will each keep tabs on about ten families in which there is at least one member, in each family, over 45 year of age. Members of these families over the age of 30 will also be asked to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire. These forms upon completion will be sealed in special envelopes and returned to the researcher, by the family, for transmittal to New York for automatic tabulation. Volunteers will not know the contents of the completed questionnaires.
Those individuals participating in the survey will be asked to full out shorter questionnaires every two years. Yearly, during the next six years, the survey's volunteers will make routine reports on the health status of the families for which they are responsible.
He said, "while cancer can occur at any age, about 96 per cent of the cases occur after the age of 30 and approximately 84 per cent occur after the age of 45."
"One of the most valuable products of the Living Habits Study," Dr. Davis added, "would be knowledge that could forewarn certain persons that they are more likely to fall prey to cancer."
"For instance, the questionnaire for women has 13 questions about female health. Both questionnaires have some dealing with family health; present physical comp personal habits, occupation and religion."

The more likely to fall prey to cancer.
"For instance, the questionnaire for women has 13 extra questions about female organs. With questionnaires have sections dealing with family health history, present physical complaints, personal habits, occupation, race and religion."
Cigarette smokers will be asked they use filters. Men will be asked if they are bald. All will be asked how often they use aspirin, vitamins, sleeping pills, anquilizers, laxatives and anti-inflammatory drugs if they ever lived in a house with a person who had cancer. Much of the questionnaire is devoted to food habits. Even dental health is investigated; subjects will be asked if they wear full or partial plates.
The important questions the survey seeks to answer are: Is a tendency toward cancer more prevalent in some families? What relationships count between cancer and other diseases? Is the frequency of childbirth associated with cancer? What are relationships between diet and cancer?
Is inhalation of cigarette smoke a factor in development of cancer?
Dr. Davis said, "The evaluation of this honest information could lead us far in our attempt to break through the cancer barrier. Each participant in this serious poll will be aiding cancer research, contributing, as no other person can, to the fight against this mysterious killer."
Persons interested in being volunteer researchers are asked to call the American Cancer Society, Orange County Branch, 848

The time-clock sprinklers not only do a more thorough job of watering and save on consumption but will pay for the system within three years. Similar sprinklers were installed on some of the athletic fields.
The planting of lawn, shrubs and more than 100 trees has transformed the central area around the new Nealley Library, Publications Center, Arts Center and Technical Center.
