Anaheim Pupils In Conference
Three students from Anaheim high school will participate in a statewide conference on "Food Comes First for Youthpower," at Aslomar on the Monterey Peninsula next week, January 8-10.
The local students are Edward McLaughlin, Joanne S. Mickelson and Sharon Woodruff. They will work with delegates from throughout the state in attempting to develop information on teenage habits and attitudes toward food, which may prove valuable in promoting better nutrition among young people.
"Food Comes First for Youthpower" is an outgrowth of the food conference last year in Washington and Sacramento. The state-wide conference is being held under the direction of the state Farm Bureau organization.
Poet Given Award
A former Fullerton Union High School student, Ann Stanford White, has been awarded the Silver Medal in literature for her book of poetry, Magellan. The award, given by the Commonwealth Club of California, was for the best book of poetry written by a Californian in 1958, according to the Talisman Press, publishers of the book.
Chamber of Commerce Looks Toward 1960
The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce is looking to 1960 as a year of great challenge, according to George Strachan, manager of the organization, and he added, "we must meet this challenge if we are to keep pace with our needs for services and carry out the major projects for our program."
"Anaheim is the fastest growing city in the fastest growing county in the nation, according to federal government figures which were released recently." New services, radio and television," Strachan said, "are being focused on Anaheim and I believe 1960 will be a year of national and international recognition for our city."
The Chamber of Commerce has every reason to believe that we will have increased activity in the tourist business in Anaheim. "This will make it mandatory," Strachan stated, "for us to carry out projects for better transportation, additional beautification and more highway directional signs not only for visitors but for local residents as well."
Walt Taylor is the new president of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and will soon name the chairmen of the various committees who will serve the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce for the year 1960. Plans for procedures will be presented to the board of directors at the January meeting and the program of the Chamber of Commerce is expected to get under way immediately and will need and appreciate the cooperation of all Chamber of Commerce members and Anaheim residents.
Public Hearings Planned by Demos
Plans for public hearings by a Western States Democratic Conference sub-committee on conservation and recreation, under the chairmanship of Northern California Democratic Chairman Roger Kent, were announced.
The hearings will be conducted at the Fairmont Hotel on January 23-24, and individuals interested in various aspects of conservation and recreation are invited to attend and submit written statements.
The information thus obtained will form the basis for recommendations to the Western States Democratic Conference meeting at Alberque next February.
