Many Guests See Altec’s Showing of Loud Speaker City and county officials from Orange County were guests at a demonstration of a new air raid and disaster warning system produced by the Altec Lansing Corporation, a subsidiary of Ling-Altec Electronics, Inc., of Anaheim. Held at the Orange County Airport, the demonstration compared Altec’s air modulated horn loudspeaker system with existing warning systems such as sirens and conventional loudspeakers. Spectators heard and clearly understood voice messages relayed over the Altec system at a distance of approximately one mile. An oscillating audio signal was heard clearly at a distance of more than two miles. Voice over the conventional loudspeaker could barely be heard at one mile, while the air modulated warning signal was much more powerful than the two horsepower siren. The conventional loudspeaker and siren could not be heard at two miles. Much More Powerful According to Dr. John K. Hilliard, vice president and director of advanced engineering at Altec, Centralia Schools Try New Gift Idea Something new in the way of exchanging gifts will be tried this Christmas in several of Centralia School district's classrooms, especially in the lower grades. Instead of the usual exchange of trinkets and trivia, many of the rooms will participate by sharing 25 and 35 cent paper back books, such as the "Golden Books." Notices have been sent home to parents explaining the principal of "Operation Book Exchange." After a child has finished reading a book during the holiday vacation which he has purchased, he may then donate the volume to the class, writing his name, room number and "Christmas, 1959" on the inside cover. Principals sending notices home to parents are James S. Lavold, Mira Linda and Melvin J. Miller, Glen H. Dysinger, Sr., elementary schools. 142nd Traffic Fatality of Year Is Anaheim Man Southern Counties Gas Pays County $537,600 in Taxes Southern Counties Gas Co. has paid $537,600 to Orange County and its communities as a first installment on its 1959-60 real and property taxes which in April, when the second installment is due, will total approximately $1 million. Taxes paid for the year in Orange County by the privately- Voice over the conventional loudspeaker could barely be heard at one mile, while the air modulated warning signal was much more powerful than the two horse-power siren. The conventional loudspeaker and siren could not be heard at two miles. Much More Powerful According to Dr. John K. Hillard, vice president and director of advanced engineering at Altec, the air modulated loudspeaker is 50 to 100 times more powerful than known existing loudspeaker systems proposed for this use. He pointed out to the officials who ranged from civil defense and Orange County Communications Department representatives to municipal fire and police authorities, that the advantage of a loudspeaker system over a siren system is one of instruction. "After the oscillating signal warms citizens of an emergency, voice can then be used to describe the nature of the emergency and relay instructions to the populace," Dr. Hillard said. "This eliminates confusion and panic." Aids Volunteer Firemen Fire department officials at the demonstration noted that a system utilizing air modulated loudspeakers could be used to alert volunteer firemen of a fire and to direct them directly to the scene, thus saving valuable time in precluding a trip to the firse station. Portable versions can also be used at fires to direct activities. The Altec system differs from conventional loudspeakers in that it uses compressed air rather than electrical power as its major source of energy. The voice coil of the horn is modulated by the air in much the same manner as the human "voice box" is modulated by air from the lungs. CHEAP "It doesn't cost anything to be optimistic," says a sweetness-and-light writer. Well, yes; it costs nothing, that is, except many disappointments. 142nd Traffic Fatality of Year Is Anaheim Man An elderly pedestrian, Herman Henry Reder, 64, of 1767 Sumac Lane, Anaheim, was killed instantly when struck by an automobile while crossing Katella Ave. from Humor St. The car, police report, was operated by William R. Tizzard, 18, of 11671 Morgan Lane, Garden Grove, a Garden Grove High School senior. Young Tizzard told police he did not see the victim until it was too late to avoid the accident. The impact knocked Reder several feet from the point of impact, stripping him of his shoes. Tizzard's sister, with him at the time, said she did not see Reder until just before the latter was hit. The victim, crossing the heavily traveled north-south highway, was going to the shopping center about 200 yards from the scene of the accident. He lived only a block away. Reder is survived by his widow, Anna Marie, and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Romo of 10861 Endry St., Anaheim. Reder's death brought traffic fatalities in Orange County for the year to 142 compared to 102 at this time last year. Half-time Students Here Number 1,441 Twelve of 40 Orange County school districts have double sessions because of classroom shortage, according to Linton Simmons, county superintendent of schools. Anaheim Union High School District ranks second in the list with 1,441 students. Costa Mesa Union School District is first with 2,268 students in double sessions. Savanna High School Site Price $178,000 Authorization for purchase of a site for the new Savanna High School in the amount of $178,900 has been voted by the board of trustees. Anaheim Union High School District. The price averages little more than $11,000 an acres and is based on the appraisal of the four properties involved. CHEAP "It doesn't cost anything to be optimistic," says a sweetness-and-light writer. Well, yes; it costs nothing, that is, except many disappointments. CHRISTMAS SEALS AT WORK—Two young boys in the county took quite literally the slogan of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association to "Buy and Use Christmas Seals" when they readied their Christmas package for mailing. Hans and Frank Kauffman, of Anaheim, had the right idea, but, although funds from the annual sale of Christmas Seals are used to further the programs of tuberculin testing and chest x-rays, education, research and patient rehabilitation, they can't be used in lieu of postage. Thousands of residents in the county this week will be receiving reminders urging them to help fight TB and join the list of people who have already contributed, bringing the latest tally to $52,172. Those who have not received Christmas Seals in the mail may purchase them by contacting the office of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association. EPSCO-WEST’S NEW ANAHEIM SETUP Expected to be Ready in January Epsco-West expects to occupy its new Anaheim facility at 240 E. Palais Rd. in January, General Manager W. E. Rianda announces. Coordinated Construction, Inc. is the contractor. The western operating division of Epsco, Inc., of Cambridge, Mass., which only recently occupied its first unit under lease arrangements by the John B. Kilroy Co. industrial realtors will have square feet of the facility. The three-acre site will be fully landscaped, with parking space for 250 automobiles. The second unit will be utilized primarily for manufacturing, research and development. Kenneth Williams appears before the Grand Jury at Santa Ana Monday will be recent huddles in Santa Ana and Buena Park of some of the nation's top gangsters, including the notorious Mickey Cohen of Los Angeles. While Williams and Grand Jury Foreman Glenn Lewis of Fullerton are noncommittal about the panel's surprise probe of possible infiltration of organized crime into Orange County, it is known that the subject will come before the jurors. Williams, however, admits that he will present voluminous data compiled by his newly-organized intelligence unit regarding underworld designs on "Organizing" Orane County. Police say the two, posing as Military Police, would visit motel rooms where Marines were staging parties, allege the Marines were making too much noise, that the management had complained and that, as Military Police, they would have to take them in unless they each forked over $5. Police add that they obtained $10 from one group and $30 from another.
