OCC'S 'Hamlet' Production Shows Elaborate Planning
Orange Coast College's first stage production of the year, "Hamlet" is being presented this week in the OCC auditorium with an estimated attendance of 4,500 people. Curtain will rise tonight, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 o'clock.
The production is the combined effort of over 200 people. It represents 200 previous stage productions in combined experience, among the actors and directors. "The costumes being used are valued at over $50,000," Lucian Scott, drama instructor, said.
"Each person in the play is worth $30 in funds spent to produce 'Hamlet.'" Scott said. "That includes all of the people working behind the scenes."
"It will cost about $3,000 to produce this play," said John Ford, drama instructor.
In the cast itself there are 50 people taking parts. Of these, nine have major roles. They are David Emmes, Ham-
let; Ross Johnson, Claudius, king; Connie Jebb, Queen Gertrude; Creque Wolverton, Lilianus, and his children; Linseverson, Ophelia, and Dawn Clements; Laertes. The couriers are David Rothauser, Renecrantz and Charles Mitch Guildenstern.
Scott is directing the play with the help of Harold Mora, light director; Tom Hovey, stage manager, and Sam Pitts, sound director.
Scott has worked with New York Theatre Guild and Norman del Geddes in New York City. Before his 12 years in New York he graduated from the College of the Pacific with a B.A. degree.
Since then he has served in the Army, obtained his teaching credentials and taught Highlands University, New Mexico, and Taft J.C. in California. This is his 23th production since coming to Oce in 1955. He received his M degree from Highlands University.

Orange County Philharmonic
Concert Held; Seeks Funds
The Santa Ana High School auditorium was filled to capacity Saturday evening when the Orange County Philharmonic Society presented a free-to-the-public concert. The Philharmonic Orchestra, Frieda Bellinfante, musical director, and Marie Handy, soprano soloist, were heard in a program that brought rounds of applause.
The concert was financed by Philharmonic Society memberships, and by a grant from the Trust Fund of the Recording Industry obtained by cooperation of Local 7, American Federation of Musicians.
Brigadier General David H. Blakelock, president of the Philharmonic Society, has announced that to complete the Society's program of events for the current season increased membership support needs to be forthcoming. In a letter to members who have not renewed, and to current members asking them to enlist others, President Blakelock stresses the necessity for more public membership contributions.
The operational expense of the orchestra has increased considerably since the philharmonic was founded six years ago. In order to assist the Philharmonic in becoming a reality for Orange County, the orchestra personnel generously donated many rehearsals, which, under union regulations, they can no longer do, or should they be asked to contribute more than they already have given.
Thousands of Orange County school students hear "live" symphony music of high standard entirely free of charge, through the generosity of many contributing members and the Musicians Trust Fund.
The public is asked to assist in the continuance of this privilege for our young people. The patron membership is $10, with membership categories of increasing amounts to donors of
