Things to See and Places to Go During Colorful Yule Festivities In Many Parts of Our Southland
Tradition is the essence of Christmas, and the Southland is fortunate in being heir to many traditions. German, English, Spanish, Mexican, Eastern U.S., and indigenous customs all blend to make Christmas here colorful and gay — or deeply reverent.
Here is a special schedule of Yuletide activities in the area compiled by the Automobile Club of Southern California.
ALTADENA — "Story Book Lane" for the ninth year will feature life-size tableaux of nursery rhymes. Displays at 33 homes are expected to begin Dec. 20 and remain up through Dec. 30. The Lane can be reached by driving north on Fair Oaks, turning left on Ventura, and right on La Fiesta Ave. after one short block. The display is north on La Fiesta, left on Calaveras to Glenrose Ave.
"Christmas Tree Lane," one mile of deodors planted in 1885, lighted to their full 80-foot height, is one of the Southland's most spectacular sights. Trees are located on Santa Rose Ave., from Las Flores to Woodbury Rd. Traffic is one-way southbound with headlights off, nightly from 5 to 10, Christmas Eve to Jan. 1.
The Nightingale Star, a 35-foot Christmas star visible from many points in town, is located at Loma Blvd. and Lake Ames as the parade of commercial and religious floats, bands, drill teams, and bugle corps herald the Christmas season. The parade route is Whittier Blvd., from 21st to 3rd St.
OJAI — A living nativity scene welcomes Yule visitors to this community from Dec. 22 through 24.
ONTARIO — Giant pepper trees, with lacy green leaves and red berries, line Euclid Ave. from the mountains through the town, a distance of three miles. From Dec. 8 until Christmas the trees are decorated with a massive display of lights. A band and choral group program and two Nativity Scenes, may be viewed every evening, except Saturday and Sundays, from 7 to 8 on Euclid between B and E Streets.
ORANGE COUNTY — The Forty Miles of Christmas Smiles, from Dec. 10 to 25, will offer unique sights to travelers along the Orange County Coast. Participating are the communities of Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport-Balboa, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and Clemente, which compete in three classes for best decorations.
PALM DESERT — Christmas Card Lane is created by amateur artists who paint king-sized

Disneyland Festival
ANAHEIM — The Christmas Festival in Disneyland will be held from Dec. 20 through Jan. 3. Carolers, brightly-lit Christmas trees and all the trimmings on Main Street will be highlights. A parade is scheduled for the afternoon of Dec. 20.
BISHOP — The Goodfellows Christmas Tree, a red fir at least 45 feet high, will be decorated in downtown Bishop. On Dec. 12, at noon, Santa will arrive by plane and be escorted to town by a trainload of children. A party will follow his arrival.
BUENA PARK — Carols, sung by church choirs, will be heard daily until Christmas Eve at Knott's Berry Farm. Santa will tour the grounds daily on his antique sleigh, a lighted Christmas tree will float on Indian Lake, and "The Lonely Miner" Christmas Story" will be presented at the gold mine in the evenings.
CLAREMONT — "Las Posadas," a world renowned enactment of Christmas in Old Mexico, plays nightly. Wednesday through Saturday, through December at Padua Hills theater.
"Pageant of Faith"
CORONA — "Pageant of Faith" 26th annual parade of floats featuring biblical scenes depicting events leading to Christ's Birth, begins at 7 p.m., Dec. 11. Bands play carols during parade, after which carolers join in to give a concert on the City Hall steps.
JOSHUA TREE — This desert town, similar to Bethlehem in terrain, will fashion its Main St. into shops and homes of the Holy Land as they looked on the first Christmas. A pageant will be presented by the residents nightly at 7:30.
LANCASTER — Dec. 12 is the date for the 16th annual Christmas parade on Lancaster Blvd. beginning at 2 p.m. Floats will de-

"Christmas from Many Lands" is the Municipal Art Gallery's way of saying "Merry Christmas." This is the fourth annual observance in which holiday table decorations, costumed dolls and folk-art gifts will be displayed in more than 35 booths. Special hour-long programs of folk songs and dances will be presented nightly at 8 p.m. and at 3, 5 and 8 p.m. on Sundays.
A Christmas Benefit Show will be held on Friday, Dec. 11. 8 p.m., in Shrine Auditorium. There will be four hours of entertainment with top movie and TV stars.
