Rockefeller trails Kennedy in the poll. The percentages are Nixon 52 per cent, Kennedy 45 per cent; or with Rockefeller against Kennedy the results are Kennedy 48 per cent, Rockefeller 44 per cent. Independent voters favored Nixon 56 per cent to 21 per cent for Rockefeller. These are among the valid reasons why California Republican leaders are convinced the party has closed ranks, cast aside its dissension, and will give a stronger account of itself at the polls in 1960.
