A2 - Anaheim Gazette (Anaheim Gazette, Sept. 17, 1908) THOMPSON (Continued from Page (1)) For the delay there were many deserving residents, especially those who have served on citizen's committees, who could be appointed to the post. Thompson is presently president of the local United Fund board of directors. He has served in many other charity roles, including the Red Cross and the Crippled Children's Association. Thompson will serve until April 1961. He is chairman of the City Planning Commission. Borden resigned his post recently after stating that because of "business reasons" he could not continue to devote the time needed to serve on the council. Los Angeles St. ANAHEIM Tire Retreading 8 HOUR SERVICE COFFEE HOUSE BEATNIK THREAT FORCES CITY COUNCIL ACTION City councilmen today have apparently won first round in their attempt to discourage the "beat generation" and its coffee houses from locating here. They passed first reading of an ordinance Tuesday night requiring all restaurants and cafes providing entertainment here to apply for a special permit. The only exception is where a restaurant has music in connection with dancing. City officials said this is already covered by another ordinance which requires business places to apply for a dance permit. City Attorney Preston Turner informed councilmen the new ordinance will give them power to regulate all entertainment and control it in coffee houses if any decide to locate here. At present there are no such "beat generation" hangouts in Anaheim. Turner said that in the opinion of Police Chief Mark Stephenson coffee houses in many instances are centers for narcotic traffic and are of little "moral value" to the city. He said the places become "teenage hangouts" and this is what the ordinance is attempting to prevent. Survey of other cities has coffee houses shows that "moral atmosphere" of places are directly in proportion to the type of entertainment fered, city officials said. How could he pass up such an opportunity? The average politician in the United States can't. Nikita does have his constituents to worry about even though they have little to say who leads their country. THE WORLD GREETERS-An interesting highlight to Krushchev's visit is that "world traveling" Buena Park wanted to get life the act, too. Now this is not too much to expect from our neighbor city It apparently thinks nothing of sending a boy's baseball team to Japan. They of course came out with an offer to host the top Russian as part of his visit here. Not that it isn't a good idea to be a little international minded. But it appears as though Buena Park would have had enough after the local hassle about sending a boy's baseball team to the Orient. In fact, it could be said that our neighbor, now in the middle of a recall election, could better straighten out their own, close-to-home problems instead of trying to get into the already confused international picture.
