A4 - Anaheim Gazette (Anaheim Gazette, Sept. 10, 1958) Tennis Players Hold Rematch In Tournament Renewing old rivalries were the tennis novices from the City Park, Brookhurst and Anaheim high tennis centers, who met last week in a special rematch tournament. The games provided the young players, who are enrolled in the recreation department's ten week tennis program, with the actual feel and excitement of big time tournament competition. Likewise, the contestants provided the assembly of parent-juvenile spectators with some of the finest and hard fought tennis ever seen on the high school courts. A particularly exciting match was the thriller in which number one seeded Eddie Stottak of Brookhurst defeated first seeded Mark Foucher of City Park, 12-10 in two hours of grueling play. In team play, City Park and Anaheim High each won two of the eleven matches, with the remaining victories going to Brookhurst. Contestants and scores were: Eddie Sottak, Br. def. Anaheim Football Stars Lauded by Cerritos Coaches Cerritos College football coach, Don Hall, had nothing but praise to pass out to ex-Anaheim High School gridder Bob McPhillips. The 160-pound halfback scored the only two touchdowns in the annual Orange County All-Star game which the North team won, 14-2. McPhillips is one of two former Colonists who have indicated that they will play for the Falcons in the 59 season. Halfback Dick McKnight will also be among the candidates when Cerritos opens its first practice sessions on September 1. McPhillips was selected as the all-star game's outstanding back. Hall plans to use the brilliant freshman runner at the left half-back spot. McKnight was one of Anaheim's most outstanding defensive backs. The 170-pounder will be used at the right halfback slot. Both players served under Anaheim Coach Claire Van Hoorebeke, whose perennial powerhouse McPhillips was selected as the all-star game's outstanding back. Hall plans to use the brilliant freshman runner at the left halfback spot. McKnight was one of Anaheim's most outstanding defensive backs. The 170-pounder will be used at the right halfback slot. Both players served under Anaheim Coach Claire Van Hoorebeke, whose perennial powerhouse won another Sunset League title in 1958. Hall is in his first year at Cerritos after a meteoric career at Stockton College in Northern California. Advance Tennis Classes Holding City Tournament The Tennis Program at the City Park, sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, is now in its 10th week. The advanced classes have played matches with Santa Ana and Fullerton and some players went to the Arcadia Tournament. Eighteen players from the advanced classes played in the San Diego Tournament at the Morley Courts in Balboa Park. The following people played singles: Brian Stieler, Don Silliphant, Larry Hood, Paul Cilley, Jim Stieler, Doug Cook, John Zelnar, Greg Bagks, Jack Messamer, Biff Hawkey, Nina Polley, Pat Busald, Reenie Demler, Paige Bruington, Roberta Welzler, Elizabeth Wilson, Bobhi Hutcheson, and Jean-pe Ziegler. on Visit By N.
