New Area State College Announces New Appointments to Teaching Staff
In recent staff appointments at Orange County State College, President William B. Langsdorf has announced the addition of three Orange County scholars and educators to the teaching faculty for September 1959.
Dr. Lester Beals, Dean of Students at Santa Ana College since 1956, has resigned that post to accept a position as professor of education. Dr. Beals received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska.
He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Education by the University of Oregon. He taught social studies in public schools in Nebraska and Oregon, served as a counselor of boys, and as an elementary and a junior high school principal. In 1950 he joined the staff of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, as Professor of Education. In 1952-53 he served on a Fulbright appointment as consultant to the Turkish Ministry of Education. Before moving to California, Dr. Beals was Dean of Student Services at San Antonio College.

Dr. Seth A. Fessenden, currently research consultant for Toastmasters International, with headquarters in Santa Ana, has been named professor of speech. Professor Fessanden is one of the outgoing director of speech at Kutztown State Teachers College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Fessenden received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois and his doctorate from New York University. He is the author of several books, including, Designed for Listening, Basic Experiences in Speech; and Understanding and Being Understood.
Dr. Barbara A. Hartsig, elementary curriculum counselor since 1950 for the Orange County Schools, has joined the staff of Orange County State College as Professor of Elementary Education. Dr. Hartsig graduated from Occidental College, received her master's degree in education from the University of Southern California, and the degree of Doctor of Education from the University of California at Los Angeles. She is a member of several professional organizations which include the National Council of Teachers of English, Orange County Association for Childhood Education, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Pi Lambda Theta.
She began her career in Lancaster, California, as an elementary teacher, then was appointed supervisor of the Placer County Schools in Auhurn, California.
Area College One Of Six Offering Business Program
When Orange Coast College opens its doors Sept. 14 to an expected enrollment of 2400 students, it will be one of six colleges in California to offer a two-year course in business data processing.
The course will prepare students for employment as technicians in the rapidly expanding business data processing field where automation is being applied to the preparation of document reports, accounting and electronic computer programming.
In addition to familiarizing students with various kinds of the latest business data processing electronic equipment, the course will train the students to think through business operations, procedures and problems in order to set up a data processing system for any business.
OCC was selected by the Bureau of Business Education under the State Department of Education as the only junior college and one of six colleges in California to establish such a pilot project.

Dr. Sammy Lee Prepares for Another Trip Abroad to Represent the U.S.
Orange County's globe-trotting ambassador to the international sports world, Dr. Sammy Lee, today is preparing for another junket abroad to represent the United States.
The diminutive driver, twice a winner of the diving championship of the International Olympic Games, this time is bound for Spain where he will serve as an instructor and coach in a sort of military Olympics.
Officially, the program is known as Consell International du Sport Militaire. It is a 10-day clinic in various sports which is attended by military athletes from 23 different nations.
The clinic and its attendant competition this year will be held in Toledo, Spain, from Aug. 31 through Sept. 9. Dr. Lee, who operates the Sammy Lee Swimming and Diving School in Anaheim, was asked by the United States Department of Defense to attend the clinic as the United States representative on the clinic's staff.
