B1 - Anaheim Gazette Anahiem Calif., Thurs., August 8, 1958 Disneyland Hits New Heights in 1958 Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom achieved new heights in all facets of the park's operation during the past year ending July 16, according to figures released in Disneyland's annual report to Anaheim and Orange County. A record attendance of 4,534,710 persons visited Disneyland in this city last year. Spearheaded by the impact of Disneyland '59, with its $6 million in new attractions, the 1958-59 operational year was the most noteworthy since the park opened here four years ago. New Openings New attractions opened to the public last June included the submarine voyage, Matterhorn Mountain and, the Disneyland Alweg Monorail system. Investment in the park now totals $30.9 million following addition of $6 million in new attractions plus $1.3 million in other capital improvements. The figure is nearly $14 million greater than the original investment of $17 million when the park opened in 1955. Year's Attendance Attendance at Disneyland during the past 12 months totaled 4,534,710, an increase of 102,598 over 1957-58. The total is 24.3 per cent above Disneyland's first year attendance of 3,646,751 and was made despite closing on Monday and Tuesday of the park during the fall and winter months. Pointing out that recent studies by independent sources indicate the tourist and vacation industry brings an estimated $70 to $90 million annually in "new dollars" into the city and county, the report details statistics on Disneyland's payroll dollars, goods and services purchased in Orange County, employment and tax revenues—all of which reached all-time heights during the park's 1958-59 operating year. School District Approves 10 New Teachers for Fall At the July meeting of Centralla School district's board of trustees, contracts for 10 new teachers were approved. They are Leroy Green, John Sturgeon, Mmes. Virginia Pollock, Jacqueline Nichols, Joanne Doyle, Florence Van Eerde, Pauline Andes, Mary Nasser and the Misses Roberta Hyde and Ruth Finch. They also accepted resignation of Mrs. Dorothy Long. According to Superintendent Glen H. Dysinger, Sr., Centralla district will need a total of 171 property owners in the Magnolia School District are faced with a 28 cent increase in the district tax rate. The rate is to jump from last year's $1.74 to $1.87, according to Rex Nerison, district business manager. A budget of $2,150,000 for the 1959-60 fiscal years has been submitted to the county superintendent of schools for publication. It is $223,560 more than last year's budget of $1,826,440. Public hearing on the budget was held Monday. Neirson said the district expects a 10 per cent increase in assessed valuation, increasing to Couple Ordered To Appear for 'Child Neglect' An Anaheim couple has been ordered to appear August 11 in Anaheim - Fullerton Municipal Court for endangering the life of a small child. The charges are brought against Rose K. Coleman and her husband, Clarence, both of 9822 Clearbrook Lane. Both parents were released on $250 bail. Investigators charged the couple left their daughter Sharon Kay, 9 alone and unattended in According to Superintendent Glen H. Dysinger, Sr., Centralia district will need a total of 171 teachers by September. Of this number, 163 positions have been filled, leaving only eight more elementary teachers to be hired. Trustees were told in a progress report on building in the district that plasterers had returned to the job at the new Oro Grande school. Prospects are still favorable toward occupying the school plant on the day school begins September 14. This will eliminate need for double sessions with Dysinger school is the building can be finished on schedule. Chosen Harold E. Fields was chosen by fellow members to serve on a committee at the county level for one year to elect members to Orange County's committee on school district organization. Expecting to attend a one-day school board association annual conference in Claremont on July 25 are Centralia district trustees John Barton, Howard Lamb, Jack Maurer and Palmer G. Campen, assistant superintendent in charge of business. By action of the board, a former policy requiring medical affidavits was changed to conform with a state law which recognizes a certificate from an individual's church if an affidavit is against his religious principles. The board approved Mutual of Omaha as carrier for student insurance. Parents may purchase policies for their children in Centralia district at a cost of $2.50 next year which will pay doctor bills in case a child is hurt in an accident on the schoolgrounds. Parents will deal with the insurance company directly on any claim. Purchase of the policy is optional. Richard E. Fischer, head of transportation in the district, will attended a one-day meeting recently in Long Beach for school bus drivers. Assemblyman Wins Committee Posts Speaker of the Assembly, Ralph Brown, announced from Sacramento this week that he was appointing Richard T. Hanna, Assemblyman from the 75th District which covers Anaheim in Orange County, to two important education posts to serve during the interim between the just concluded 1959 General Session and the Budget Session of 1960. Hanna was named as one of four Assemblymen to serve on the Llanson Committee for Higher Education. Hanna has served on the Education Committee in the Assembly for the past three years, and has been a member of the subcommittee on Higher Education for a good portion of that time. Brown also announced that Hanna would be continued as a member of the Joint Committee on Education which is made up of seven members of the Senate and of the Assembly. Anaheim Hostess Heads Survey on State Recreation The recreation fare of Oranga and San Diego Counties families is being explored so that planers of outdoor recreation facilities can project greater scope for the fast-swelling population. Mrs. Margaret Peterson, director of the City Hostesses in Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana is in charge of the survey in Orange County. The statewide Family Recreation Survey of the California Public Outdoor Recreation Plan committee was begun a week ago today. Their detailed finding from questionnaire will be submitted to the State Legislature in March of next year. The Legislature has requested that a recreation plan be submitted. The equipment is being designed and fabricated by Cleaver-Brooks Special Products, Inc., of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Its over-all cost is estimated to be about $250,000. CHP Warns On 'Competition' The competitive spirit of most Americans is a great asset to the athletic field, but it is a serious hazard to highway safety says Capt. F. E. Winchell of the Anaheim Highway Patrol. "Competition on the highway takes the form of excess speed, grabbing instead of yelling the right of way, and cutting in and out of traffic." The Captain declared, "All these actions are unlawful, sportsmanlike and unsafe, each accounts for a great number of the traffic accidents in the area." Noting that traffic safety "largely a personal matter," commander of the Patrol's Anaheim Area office added: "We have fewer accidents and injuries and kill fewer people if we situate courtesy for competition and really try to give the other fellow a break." 1958 world's first year attend8,646,751 and was made closing on Monday and of the park during the winter months. g out that recent studies dependent sources indicate ist and vacation indusgans an estimated $70 to on annually in "new into the city and counport details statistics on and services purchased in County, employment and nues—all of which reachone heights during the 1958-59 operating year.
