Four Anaheim Firms Help Build 'Hustler' Bomber
Four Anaheim firms are among 29 suppliers in the 28th Congressional District who furnish material for the Air Force's Convair B-58 Bomber, "Hustler," according to Congressman James B. Utt, who reported that the B158 is now undergoing flight testing at General Dynamics Corporation's Convair Division at the Fort Worth, Texas, plaint.
The firms include: Marco Industries; 207 South Helena St.; A. C. Smith Corporation, Aeronautical Western Division; Stoner Rubber Co., 7061 E. Monroe St.; Task Corporation, 1009 E. Vermont Street.
"The B-58 is the world's first and finest supersonic bomber," Utt said, "with a maximum speed over 1300 miles an hour, which to Machine." The needle-nosed, fourJet, delta-winged bomber carries a three-man crew, is about 97 feet long and has a wing span of approximately 57 feet. It is powered by four General Electric J-79 engines and is designed to operate at altitudes above 50,000.
NOTHING TRADIONAL
"There is nothing traditional about the Nach 2 B-58 'Hustler'," Utt said. "It is unconventional in speed, size, in its techniques of accomplishing various missions, in many new production methods dictated by its advance design and in the way in which its intricate system were integrated into one complete unit.

It is designed around the "minimumize" concept, packing maximum mission performance and flexibility into minimum weight and space. An important part of this concept is the disposable aliment pod carried beneath the B-58's slender fuselage. The pod obviates the necessity for distant hauling of useless empty space within the aircraft after bombs have been dropped or fuel has been used. The "Hustler" was designed specifically to carry such a capsule, or detachable pod, which can be a devastating bomb, a battery of cameras or a container for electronic countermeasures.
The B-58's heat and fatigue resistant skin is fabricated of fiberglass, aluminum and stainless steel honeycomb, sandwiched between two layers—a major break-through in aeronautical technology. About 90 percent of the wing surface is made of honeycomb sandwich panels.
