YMCA Directors
Honor Youths
With Certificates
Two Anaheim youths, John Kohlenberger, 314 N. Philadelphia, and Charles Osborn, 128 N. Rose St., were honored with Candidate Secretary certificates at the YMCA Board of Directors meeting.
James Abrecht, 'Y' personnel chairman, made the introductions and William Fricker, 'Y' president, awarded the certificates on behalf of the Anaheim Board and the Pacific Southwest Area YMCA.
Kohlenberger graduated from Anaheim Union High School in 1956, attended Fullerton Junior College two full years and evenings during the past year while employed at the Electra Motor Co. Friday he will leave by plane for the Hilo County YMCA Camp, Hawaii, where he will serve as assistant director this summer.
In the fall he plans to attend George Williams College in Chicago preparing for the YMCA professional service.
COMPLETES — Gus L. Keolanui, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Bittenbender of 12292 Orangewood, Anaheim, was one of 720 Naval Academy Second Class Midshipmen who completed two weeks of amphibious warfare indoctrination at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base June 18. Prior to making their amphibious assault, Midshipmen observed a Marine landing June 11, and on June 15 commenced shipboard training.

CORPORAL—Promoted May 22 to Marine Corporal, was Richard H. Roamer, brother of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Boekelheide of 10822 Magnolia, Anaheim, Calif. He is serving as an administrative clerk with Headquarters Company, a unit of the 3rd Marine Division at Camp Smedley D. Butler on Okinawa.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Murvin B. Allen, apprentice petty officer second class, USN, son of rMs. Irene J. Allen of 124 S. Vine, Anaheim, graduated June 5 from Recruit Training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego.
Apprentice petty officers are chosen from the ranks of the seaman recruits to assist Company Commanders. The selection is based on individual aptitude and leadership qualities.
PINNED — Marine 2d Lt. Ernest J. Contreras, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Contreras of 418 De La Fuente St., Monterey Park, has his "Wings of Gold" of a Navy aviator pinned on by his wife, the former Miss Jean Castillo of 811 Coffman Ave., Anaheim, at the Navy Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. He received his wings June 3 upon completion of advanced flight training. Before entering the service in September 1957, 2nd Lt. Contreras graduated from Occidental College.
Ark., is serving with Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 23 at the Los Alamitos Naval Air Station, Long Beach, Calif.
He reported to Long Beach May 11.
FORT SILL, Okla. — Army 2d Lt. Laurence K. Wormser, 25, son of Mrs. Paul Wormser, 2351 Calle Corta, La Holla, Calif., completed the 17-week field artillery officer basic course June 10 at The Artillery and Missile School, Fort Sill, Okla.
The course, designed for newly-commissioned officers, trained Lieutenant Wormser in the duties of a forward observer and familiarized him with the responsibilities.

Pvt. James L. Sandefur, 22,
whose wife, Peggy, and parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd J. Sandefur,
live at 1926 Random Dr., Anaheim, completed the eight-week
general supply course June 12 at
Fort Ord, Calif.
Sendefur received instruction in
the fundamentals of Army supply
procedures and the preparation of
supply records and forms.
He entered the Army last January and completed basic training
at the fort.
Sandefur is a 1955 graduate of Clay (Ky.) High School and was employed by Hughes Aircraft Co., before entering the Army.

WESTERN PACIFIC — Robert E. Dick, machinist's mate first class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dave Dick of 1275 E. Sycamore St., Anaheim, and husband of the former Miss Lory J. Masten of Parkdale, Ore., is serving aboard the destroyer USS Frank E. Evans operating with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.
The Evans participated in Operation "Granite Creek" May 25-31 off the coast of Japan. Mainly an anti-submarine exercise, the simulated war condition involved other units of the Seventh Fleet. The destroyer's job is to protect aircraft carriers from submarine attack and to act as an aircraft rescue vessel.
During her tour of the Far East, the Evans has visited Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, Okinawa and Hong Kong.

FORT ORD, CALIF. — Army Pvt. Edward M. Burrowe Jr., 23, whose parents live at 939 Agate St., Anaheim, completed the eight week basic Army administration course June 5 at Fort Ord, Calif.

The graduation exercises, marking the end of nine weeks of "boot camp", included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries.
In nine weeks of instruction, the "raw recruit" is developed into a Navy Bluejacket, ready for duty with the fleet.

Decision Favors Anaheim Planner
A decision in favor of a long time Anaheim resident and member of the Planning Commission has been made by Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner in a case filed by a La Habra real estate broker for damages of $1,250,000.
Judge Gardner, who had taken the case under submission after a week-long trial, ruled in favor of Clarence W. Mauerhan and against William M. Gribble Jr. of La Habra.

Scientist to Speak At Chapman
Chapman College announced today that it has made arrangements for Dr. Wernher von Braun, world-renowned scientist and director of the operations division of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, to present a lecture in the Chapman College Auditorium on Wednesday evening, July 15, at 8 o'clock.
Dr. von Braun recently received from President Eisenhower, in a White House ceremony, the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Service.
