EDITORIALS Bright’s Appointment A Wise Move Those in the State of California who have known Tom Bright over a period of years are exceedingly happy to hear that he has been appointed to the post of assistant director of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Bright has been associated with the State of California for many years and he made his mark as Press Secretary to Governor Goodwin J. Knight, a position he held for four years with honor and distinction. He is well known in the newspaper profession. He has been connected with a number of newspapers as well as having served under Sky Dunlap (Santa Ana College) as a reporter for the United Press. Newspapermen generally will recognize his appointment by Robert McCarthy, director, as a wise move. In selecting Bright the director said, "I want the strongest man for this job I can get." And he did when he picked Tom Bright. Fatal accidents and careless driving on the highways must be reduced and the new Director and his able assistant will bend every effort to reduce the California death toll. Have We the Strength (The author of the following has just graduated as class Valedictorian from the Banks, Oregon, High School. This was her Valedictory address.) As we emerge from our comfortable cradle of adolescence we are facing something that no generation has ever faced before. It has crept upon you, our parents, so slowly that you have been able to build up a protective barrier around yourselves. Are you hiding behind your wall of comfortable traditions and American ideals, or will you tear down that wall of complacency and use our American ideals, of which we are so proud, as a weapon against our enemies? You have given us love, understanding, and guidance. You have also given us the most wonderful country in the world in the most enlightened age since life came on earth. Because the newsletter of colleague, Senator Norris Coe of New Hampshire, covers a project on which we have had a great volume of correspondence, I take the privilege of substituting it for my weekly report. "The danger from bomb fallout continues to be a nail-grossing problem. However, leading scientists, both in and of government, appeared be the Atomic Energy Commissar and dispelled many of the rumors aroused by the more sensational press reports. For instance, the country has been shocked by a dramatic nouncement that a loaf of bread in New York contains 25 per cent more of the deadly "Strontium 90" as a result of bomb test immediately everyone was arrested by horrid nightmares of limbia, bone cancer, and malformations. Actually, said the statistis, even this increased and is so infinitesimal that to health hazard a person would have to eat three loaves of a day for 70 years. They represent the added radioactivity the atmosphere to which we exposed is less than one-twentieth of the amount that enters the when the dentist X-rays our One expert said:that to get cancer from the present f As we emerge from our comfortable cradle of adolescence we are facing something that no generation has ever faced before. For this we humbly thank you. But you have also given us something that is hard to face: the fact that we are living under a shadow of danger. Our soft rug may be jerked out from under us at any moment. We may fall so hard that the earth can never recover from the shock. We may witness the most terrible and total destruction that the world has ever seen. Yes, you have given us all of this and more; but have you given us the strength to face the world you have given us? Can we survive a battle for our way of life that will make the two world wars seem like a tea party? Are we mentally strong enough to face this war of nerves? When the chips are down can we work together a common goal despite personal selfishness and prejudice? Do we have a sense of values and do we know what we are fighting for? Do we dare think! Throughout history the forces of good and evil have been in constant turmoil. Now these battles seem like minor skirmishes. Today two powerful monsters have gathered their forces for the purpose of destruction. They are separated only by a narrow strip of water as they pace restlessly back and forth, snarling insults at each other. We, the newest generation, may be criticized for having too much handed to us on a silver platter. We are able to have many material things which our parents could never hope to have had at our ages. Perhaps we are living in an age of luxury. But beneath our soft seat of luxury lies a horrible time bomb that quietly ticks off the minutes and seconds—the seconds until the moment when we become complacent or lax. When that time comes life as we know it will end. No. The world you have given us upon your silver platter is far from a life of ease. Do you dare to think? You have given us the destiny of the world on your silver platter; and we do dare to think: we are not the "beat generation"—we have just begun to fight. With God's help we accept the challenge. Education 1959 "Parents will borrow money to buy a house, but are horrified if it is suggested that they take out a loan for college education." This was the statement of Dr. Millicent G. McIntosh, president of Barnard College at a recent Columbia College-Barnard College alumni meeting. Dr. McIntosh observed that there is something wrong with the American table of values when we're willing to pay double for the 1939 price for a car, or a house, but balk at paying more for a college education. While the educator may be understandably prejudiced on this subject, her observations deserve careful thought. Undoubtedly she does not expect the average American family to drastically lower its standard of living in order to provide education. But she does believe that before a family This was the statement of Dr. But she does believe that before a family spends all of its money or borrows to the limit for material things, it should analyze the educational needs of its children and make some plan for taking care of them. Certainly, parents should be as willing to borrow to educate their children as they are to borrow to give them an adequate home. The growing need for highly trained men and women in various fields and the growing cost of education recently prompted Bank of America to offer special "Studyplan" loans. This is a low-cost, life-trained program in amounts up to $10,000 that are paid back on a regular monthly basis like amounts up to $10,000 that are paid back on a regular monthly basis like most other loans. The plan thus assures funds from enrollment to graduation. Dr. McIntosh stresses that we can no longer think of education in the terms of 1939. This is 1959 and it is time we realized it. Always the Other Guy? Accidents killed 655 "other guys during the Fourth of July holiday last year." Three hundred and seventy "other guys" died in traffic, 192 by drowning and 98 in miscellaneous accidents. Not one of those 655 thought an accident could or would happen to him. The "other guy" is all of us. No one is immune from accidents. Or rather, everyone is immune to the extent of his own coution or common sense. This Fourth of July — like last year's — will be a three-day weekend holiday for millions of Americans. The national Safety Council has warned that motorists will clog high ways and funseekers will jam parks, lakes and picnic grounds. The time will be ripe for some kind of accident. Don't you be one of the "other guys" this Independence Day. Winners Names Change Each Week!
