Babe Ruth Season Moves Into High Gear The West Anaheim Babe Ruth League season is in high gear now as they swing into their third week of competition at Western High School. The Athletics and Tigers started off festivities with a 6 p.m. contest last week. With the score knotted at 2 all going into the bottom of the fifth, the Athletics came to life with a four run rally to ice the contest 6-2. The White Sox played host to the Indians the following day in what developed in toa real pitcher's duel as White Sox chucker Hans Tromp and Tribe hurler Jim Haines pitched one hit, one run ball. Deadlocked With the score deadlocked at one run apiece in the seventh, the tilt was called because darkness and will be completed on a later date. The high flying Athletics came up with tallies in the fifth and sixth stanzas to drop the Red Sox by a 4-2 decision. On Thursday the Tigers came from behind to bombard two Yankee pitchers for 10 runs on 9 hits to win going away 10-1. In the first tilt of the Sunday, double header, Tiger Bill Adams twirled 7 strike outs while allowing only three hits to tame the White Sox by a 4-1 tally. The nite-cap proved to be a real donnybrook as the Yankees, leading the Athletics 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, appeared to have it all wrapped up when the A's exploded. Bloop Single In the first tilt of the Sunday, double header, Tiger Bill Adams twirled 7 strike outs while allowing only three hits to tame the White Sox by a 4-1 tally. The nite-cap proved to be a real donnybrook as the Yankees, leading the Athletics 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, appeared to have it all wrapped up when the A's exploded. Bloop Single Pinch hitter Don Ford led things off in the seventh with a bloop single to right. Dennie Skinner then hit a double play ball that turned into a two base error on the shortstop sending Ford to third. Yank hurler Larry Lawson then loosed a wild pitch bringing home Ford and giving Skinner third base. The next batter, Wayne Moore, belted the 2-0 pitch up against the wire fence in right center field driving in the equalizer and himself to third. The Colony's poor showing came as a great surprise to most local sports enthusiasts as the locals had previously taken the title three years running. Coach John Wallin's fifth place team lost five games by one run edge which proves the decline wasn't as bad as it appears. Win Track In track it was an entirely different story as the Colony won the championship hands down by breezing through with an undefeated record. In the Sunset League championship meet it was Anaheim all the way with Bill Smith taking the 100 and 220 with times of 10:0 and 22:0 respectively. In the same meet George Bragg captured a first in the 440 with a 51:6 time while Dennis Vollom cleared 6'1" to take the high jump. After the semi-finals at Bellflower only Vollom and the relay team, composed of Smith, McPhillips, Woodward and Bragg, remained. It was not until the finals that coach Bog Hager's proteges were stopped. The Anaheimers bowed CLASSIFIED ADS FOR GAZETTE WANT ADS... CALL KEystone 5-729. BUS. Next Year 1959-60 Sunset League sports will undergo a drastic change when the La Habra Highlanders and the Western Pioneers enter the League. Western's up-and coming baseball squad looks to be a big contender as far as upending kingpin Santa Ana goes.
