THIS IS A Womän’s World DORIS LEE—SOCIAL - CLUB EDITOR Dicksie Heffern Is Recipient of Three Awards at USC Miss Dicksie Heffern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick S. Heffern of 626 N. West St., to be graduated at the University of Southern California, has been presented with the UBEA Award for outstanding achievement in business education, the Alumni Association Award in recognition of outstanding achievement and the Delta Alpha Alumni Senior Award for 1959. Miss Heffern is a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and the Pi Omega Pi Business Fraternity. She will teach at Buena Park High School in the fall. Anaheim Youths Are Honorees at Annual FJC Award Dinners Four Fullerton Junior College students from Anaheim were among 25 outstanding men students who were honored at the first annual Men-of-Distinction Night last-evening. Harold Hight, James McIlwain, David Bultena and Robert Yohn weer among the finalists of a group of 100 "Men of Distinction" announced last week. Each received an engraved medal. A "Man of the Year" was selected and presented with a plaque. Jo-Ann Burdick to Present Fourth Annual Review 'Magic Toy Shop' Jo An Burdick, recognized throughout the nation for her stylized baton and dancing routines and owner-director of Jo-An Burdick's Dance Baton and Music Studio at 200 W. Broadway, is completing plans for her fourth annual dance review, "Magic Toy Shop," to be presented June 6 at 8 p.m. at Anaheim Union High School. The "Magic Toy Shop" review will include a cast of 200 students and several professional performers, including Ted Howard, well known tap stylist and choreographer for the Tennessee Ernie Ford, Spade Cooley and Walt Disney T.V. Shows; Goo Goo the Clown Prince who appears regularly at the Moulin Rouge, and Chuck Lawrence who appeared in the leading role in "Dance of Faith" under the restion of Madam Sartorio at Philharmonic Auditorium recently. Lawrence is also Miss Burdick's professional dancing partner and will perform with her the show. The review will be present in three acts: "National Doe," "Circus Dolls" and "French-Croat Dolls." Five hundred exquisite costumes will be worn and for finale, a presentation of the "Floristas Head-dress Ball" will given. Jo-An Burdick studio will entertain with vocal masters, acrobatic, trampoline, ballet, ballet, tap, toe, moo jazz, and Spanish dancing. Tets may be purchased at the An Burdick School prior to show or at the Anaheim Uni High School the night of Show. Funds raised through the "Magic Top Shop" review will donated to the "Student Scholarship Fund." Miss Burdick's show will be corporate much she picked up her recent trip to Enid, OK where she participated as one of the judges and also as a performer in the Tri-state Music Festival. At another recent affair, the annual Band-quet, Curtis Hart of Anaheim and five other FJC band members received bronze keys indicative of two years of participation in the Hornet Band. WAA Awards Slated Tonight at Banquet Awards to members of the Women's Athletic Association at Orange Coast College will be presented at the WAA Banquet at 6 p.m. tonight in the Student Center. Participation certificates will be given to all members. Special awards will be given to the most outstanding sophomore, the most improved player in each sport and the player with the most outstanding proficiency in each sport. New officers will be announced and installed also. SOCIAL BRIEFSE The Anaheim Assistance League installed its new officers with Mrs. Melvin Duffy taking office as president. The Police Officers Wives' Club elected Mrs. Dale Wilcox as president for its second year of operation. Installation will be June 3. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Van Wagner of 215 E. North St. have left via Scandinavian Airlines for a trip to Copenhagen and Hamburg. 'Plain and Fancy' Opens Tomorrow In Pasadena, Lynn Bari Starring Theatre audiences will be transported to Pennsylvania in full musical splendor tomorrow night for the opening of Broadway musical comedy hit, "Plain and Fancy" at the Pasadena Playhouse. Starring as the sophisticated New York couple who happen in and completely disrupt the proper little Amish community of Bird-in-Hand, are Lynn Barl and Peter Adams; with guest star George Givot, who appears as stern Papa Jacob Yoder. Laurie Carroll as Katie Yoder, destined to marry the boy of her papa's choice; Pat Michon and Featured in the cast will be CC Summer School Tabs Guest Faculty Eleven guests and visiting faculty members will be teaching courses in the 1959 Chapman Summer School Director Paul Isley. Mrs. Norma Nipper, Mrs. Signa Hatfield, Mrs. Oriana Ross and Miss Florence Bechtle of the Anaheim Business and Professional Women's Club attended the state BPW Convention in Coronado over the weekend. A registered 1148 witnessed the installation of new officers. FJC Formal Held In Garden Grove The last major formal affair of the college year, the Inaugural Ball for Fullerton Junior College students, was held Friday at the Garden Grove Women's Club. Special guests for the affair were the outgoing and incoming student body officers at Fullerton JC. The two groups were headed by retiring President Wayne Wedin of Brea and newly-elected president for the coming year, Bill Lives of Orange. Mrs. Vangelia Rainey of 215 W. La Palma, Anaheim, was honored with a citation at a recitation of the three Orange County divisions of the California Retired Teachers Association in a combined meeting at the First Presbyterian Church in Orange. Approximately 200 guests are members were present for the luncheon. The meeting was conducted by Mrs. Zetta Carver, Orange, president of the Central Orange County Division. She was assisted by E. A. Ames, Fullerton president of the North Orange Coast Division. Mrs. Rainey, director of State Association, was honored for her outstanding service to the association. C. W. Preston, of Regional director for rthe National Angeles, vice-president and Retired Teachers Association made the presentation and spoke of her service as membership chairman in the county. Two of the three living charm members were also present: Ms. Myrtle Owens of Anaheim and L. L. Beeman of Santa Ana. A World CLUB EDITOR Western High Plans First Junior Prom Western High School is preparing for its first Junior Prom, to be held June 13 at the Retail Clerk's Union Hall at Stanton and Crescent. Dancing will be from 8 to midnight to the music of "The Notables." A king and queen will be chosen by popular vote of the junior class, and, in keeping with the theme of the prom, "Swing Softly," will reign on swings for thrones. Pat Biscotti is general chairman for the affair, assisted by Marylin McLeod, Donna Duval, Kris Wiley, Laura Currie, Muffi Bula and Gina MacDonald. Tickets are now available in the attendance office. New Sunkist PTA Has Successful Year Sunkist Parent-Teacher Association ended its first year of operation with a charter membership increase from 93 to 466, it was announced at the final meeting of the year. The new school won two second awards at the state fourth district convention, magazine, and program book, and honorable mention on their publicity book. Catholic Alumni Group to Attend Fresno Conclave The Orange County Catholic Alumni Club will travel to Fresno for the annual social conclave of the California Alumni Clubs May 30-31 to be held at the Fresno Hacienda. Other club members from Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego will be present. The social weekend includes dinner, dancing, swimming, golf, tennis, a floor show and water ballet. Approximately 150 people are expected to attend. Miss Georgia Grupe, Orange, is general chairman of the conclave, and Miss Gerry Vidouich, San Pedro, is program chairman, assisted by Miss Evie Bevins, Anaheim and Ed Webb, Los Angeles. The Orange County Catholic Alumni Club is open to single Catholics who are college graduates and registered nurses. Meetings are held the second and fourth Sundays of each month at St. Anthony Claret Hall, Anaheim, at 7:30 p.m. New members are welcome. Further information may be obtained by calling Lutheran School To Close June 16 Zion Lutheran Parochial School will close June 16 with graduation ceremonies for the school's eight graders, it was announced a recent PTA meeting. A school picnic will be June 13 on the school grounds; a workshop has been scheduled for June 14 in El Monte. The Walther League Y Caravan will visit the congregation from June 25 to 27, it announced. The district's spring festival, the largest ever held with a massed chorus of 350 fifth and sixth graders from the district's six schools, was well received by a large audience of parents and friends who nearly filled the huge Retail Clerk's auditorium. The program, introduced by Superintendent Glen H. Dysinger. Sr., was directed by Rees G. Olson, district director of music Directors and accompanists from each school were Miss Alma Warrell and Mrs. Florence Evenson. Mrs. Lucille Kvam directed the speaking chorus of fifth grade students from Buena Terra. Donald Robinson and Howard Peterson were in charge of lights and sound,and floral arrangements were by the Mmes. Virgie Bacon. Maxine Dearinger, Cretia Thayer and Naomi Thompson. Miller, associate head of the University of Illinois College of Engineering, spoke before the Santa Ana Sub-Section of the Institute of Radio Engineers last night at the Chrysler Training Center, Brookhurst and Santa Ana Freeway. Engineers' wives were special guests and were given valuable information on helping their husbands in their engineering careers. Miller, who has been in charge of defense research work performed at the University of Illinois, is also a consultant to private industry in technical and management fields. He discussed some recent steps taken at the University to develop an appreciation of the humanities of engineering as well as technical proficiencies in newly-graduated engineers. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dorming of 1285 E. South St. have left for a trip to Europe by way of the Scandinavian Airlines System Transpolar Flight. They will visit Copenhagen before returning to their home July 7. Orange County Is Fourth Largest in School Enrollment Orange County was the fourth largest California County in school enrollment during the 1957-58 fiscal year, according to a report appearing in the April issue of California Schools, a publication of the State Department of Education. The report also pointed out that Orange County ranked forty-eighth among the 58 counties in cost per pupil for education. Los Angeles County, it noted, had the most pupils and an average annual cost of $385 per pupil. San Diego County ranked second in size and had a per pupil cost of $349. Alameda County, which is slightly larger than Orange County, was third in pupil enrollment and spent $376 per pupil annually. The Orange County per pupil cost for education was $339.61, according to the reort, which was considerably below the state average of $372.91 per pupil.
