City Of Orange May Festival Days
Street banners and a festive mood herald the approach of Orange May Festival Days. This year marks the 28th anniversary of the gay event which will run the week of May 18 to 24.
A queen and her court have already been chosen to reign over the activities. A king will be selected by popular acclaim Tuesday night, May 19, in Chapman college auditorium, to kick off the week's festivities. From that point on everyone in Orange will be happily engaged in some kind of celebrating.

A queen and her court have already been chosen to reign over the activities. A king will be selected by popular acclaim Tuesday night, May 19, in Chapman college auditorium, to kick off the week's festivities. From that point on everyone in Orange will be happily engaged in some kind of celebrating.
Costume Contest Wednesday
Wednesday the costume contest begins with the "storybook" theme providing the ideas for Orange folks who "dress up" for the occasion. The giant carnival at City Park opens and to call attention to this event a Kiddies Parade is planned. There will be four divisions including decorated bikes, fancy wagons, marching units and clowns and pets.
Musical Faree
"Orpheus in the Underworld", a musical farce by the Chapman college drama department opens at Orange theatre Wednesday night to complete an eventful day.
In addition to the colorful carnival activity, free circus acts are staged twice daily each week day and four times on Saturday and Sunday. Friday night a dance is held in the Armory featuring an outstanding rhythm and blues orchestra.
Breakfast on Saturday
Saturday morning the Rotary club serves an "all you can eat" breakfast at the southeast corner of the plaza until time for the 2-mile long parade which has become a highlight of the May Festival. Entries this year indicate more colorful floats and bands than ever before in festival history.
Saturday afternoon finds entertainment in the form of a band concert in the bandshell at 3:30 by the Orange Youth Band under direction of Douglas Thomas. The park is also the site of another famous attraction of the festival, the beef barbecue served from 5 to 8 p.m. Master chefs A.B. (Bud) Paschall and George Heineman will be assisted by a committee from St. Peter's Lutheran church in Olive. This is traditionally one of the tastiest barbequed meals served in Orange County and attracts a large following every year.
Week of May 18-24
ARMED FORCES DAY—1959. Vice Admiral A.C.Richmond, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, which operates in peacetime under the Treasury Department and in wartime under the Department of Defense, says that it is the obligation of every thoughtful citizen to see for himself what is being done to help keep our Nation strong and free.
President Wilson made his noted "Fourteen Points" speech before Congress on Jan. 8, 1918.
Gophers are called "salamanders" in the southern states while in the west they become "dogs."
