A. Long, district manager for the electric utility company. Line crews and other personnel assigned to Edison's distribution work forces in the Fullerton, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Huntington Park, Montebello, Santa Ana, Vernon and Whittier areas qualified for the coveted award presented by Edison Electric Institute, a national association of MEDITERRANEAN — Michael B. Browning, nuclear weapon-man seaman, USN, son of Mr. J. R. Browning of 2107 Chateau Ave., and Phillip G. Minnis, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Minnis of 1155 Arbor St., all of Anaheim, are serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, operating with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. After relieving the carrier USS Forrestal late in February, the FDR visited Naples, Italy, for ten days. While with the sixth Fleet, the Roosevelt is serving as flagship for the Commander of Carrier Division Two. The 750 employees comprising Edison's southern distribution division amassed 1,288,145 accident-free man-hours between April 14, 1958, and February 7, 1959, to earn the award, Long said. An Outstanding Performance The EEI citation, signed by J. E. Corette, EEI president, and I. R. Dohr, chairman of the institute's accident prevention committee, hailed the 750 Edison employees' safety record as "an outstanding performance in accident prevention." The Edison Company as a whole recently won first place—for the third consecutive year—in a business and industry contest among utilities sponsored by the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the National Safety Council, Long pointed out. This award was for Edison's total employees working 16,300,746 man-hours during 1958 with an accident frequency rate of 4.9 accidents per million man-hours worked, he said. LONG BTACH—Joe Sanches Avala, fireman, USN, of 10881 Gilbert St., Anaheim, is scheduled to return to Long Beach, Calif., April 22 aboard the radar picket destroyer USS Herbert J. Thomas after a tour of duty with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. While on patrol duty off Taiwan on Feb. 23, the Thomas was responsible for the 'at sea' rescue of a Chinese fisherman.
