All About You
If you moved out of your chair at any time during 1959 this article is about you.
That was the year the Bureau of the Census conducted a National Travel Survey. Here are some highlights from 24,000 interviews.
Most people who traveled trips to visit friends and relatives. This accounted for 107 million trips and 546 million away from home.
Vacation and pleasure came to 61 million trips; less — 44 million. (Those on less trips often took members their families.)
July, August, September were the busiest months for travel counting for about 40 per cent all trips. This was double the el during winter months, and again as much as in the April-June period.
Most trips were taken by sons in families having an income of less than $6,000.
People who had the most money to spend stayed the longest. With $10,000 or more a year.
What goes on here? Pretty Lynn Martin would have you believe she is pouring real paint on the rear deck of a Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe, but the "paint" columns are actually made of plastic. The effect points up the recent change in customer color preference. The most popular shade in 1958 was silver blue followed closely by black. Today sapphire is leading the color parade with light blue, ivory and black in close pursuit for top honors.

Volunteers Build Juvenile Decency
"Volunteers," always indispensable to wars, church suppors and fire houses, have been quietly shaking up impressive accomplishments in recent years.
Some 70,000 of these unselfish adults have been materially re-educing — or eliminating — the course of juvenile delinquency in hundreds of cities and towns. Working with and on the more than 500 Boys' Clubs of America, they have succeeded in establishing and maintaining Juvenile Decency.

Each Club is staffed by full-time, trained professionals. Volunteers help by donating time to teaching everything from printing through painting, woodworking, music and cooking. Other thousands offer services as presidents and board members for the Clubs.
Under Herbert Hoover, board chairman for close to 25 years, a group of top-tight civic business, and industrial leaders set the national pace for volunteers. Working with Mr. Hoover is Albert L. Cole, general manager of the Reader's Office.
