IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO

BY MRS. HENRY KUCHEL
88 Years Ago ... April 15, 1871
Last Saturday night between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock, Anaheim was brilliantly illuminated for the space of three seconds, by a beautiful scintillating meteor, which appeared to be moving in a northerly direction. It was followed by a long phosphorescent tail that gradually expanded into a double one with variegated colors. After passing a short distance over the city it exploded without noise and formed into two yellowish balls which reexploded with various colors like a sky rocket and disappeared almost immediately. A light sulphurous smell was perceptible in the atmosphere for a few minutes after the explosion.
Last week San Francisco was visited by a couple of slight earthquake shocks. One lasted three seconds. This is the first earthquake that has occurred in that locality for a year.
Official information has been received from the postmaster general that, by an act of congress, passed Feb. 28, a postroad or mail route has been established between Anaheim and San Bernardino. Sheriff Nichols was in town on Monday on legal business and made a short call at this sanctum. Joe has two convicted murders on file in Los Angeles county jail for safe keeping. One awaiting sentence and the other this trial, in the person of William Southern, who slew Wm. Cuero in Santa Ana a year ago, and was lately convicted therefor, and Mr. Burdugo who shot a companion in Santa Ana some weeks ago, and whose trial began at Santa Ana on Tuesday. He is likewise in the Los Angeles county jail for safe keeping. Every prized prisoner that Joe gets he takes to Los Angeles for two reasons, first, he is afraid the fellows may break out of the Santa Ana jail and escape, and the second, the Santa Ana people may mutiny and break into the jail and lynch the prisoners. When the new county jail is erected he will have a load of care and worry off his mind and will once more smile again.
The municipal election on Monday was one of the quietest ever held in the city, and a very light vote was polled. Only 105 votes were cast and except for efforts on the part of some of the energetic citizens during the afternoon it is doubtful if 100 votes would have been cast. The vote was as follows: for trustees, C. E. Groat, 100; C. O. Rust, 94. For careful aptitude testing as well.

Official information has been received from the postmaster general that, by an act of congress, passed Feb. 28, a postroad or mail route has been established between Anaheim and San Bernardino. The postmaster at Anaheim has been charged by the department to make a sketch of the route and give all information necessary for the letting of the contract for carrying the mails over the same.
The statement of Theodore Rimpau, city treasurer, shows that for the seven months ending April 10, there was paid into the city treasury for licenses $494.14, for taxes $888.33, for fines, $27.63, making a total of $1413.10, or an average of $202 per month. For the maintenance of the city government there was laid out during that period $1335.41, leaving a balance in the city treasury of $77.69.
It is estimated that the water power of the main zanja of the Anaheim Union Water company, if properly utilized, would turn six thousand cotton spindles.
It is suggested that a petition be sent to the post office department asking that Anaheim be designated as a money order office. Transfers of money are now made with difficulty and only by telegraph or express at a high tariff.
Last Tuesday while Mr. Carroll was plowing, his horses started and ran away, tearing the plow out of the ground and smashing it into splinters. The horses escaped without injury.
By reference to advertisement it will be seen that Mr. Gilbert Huntington has lost a pocketbook on the road to Gallatin, containing drafts amounting to $1400. As payment has been stopped the drafts will be of no use to the finder, and a liberal reward is offered for their return to John Fischer.
The "Constantine," an English-built iron vessel, owned by Folger & Co., San Francisco, will be put on the lower coast route to run in connection with the "Taber."

Only 105 votes were cast and except for efforts on the part of some of the energetic citizens during the afternoon it is doubtful if 100 votes would have been cast. The vote was as follows: for trustees, C. E. Groat, 100; C. O. Rust, 94. For clerk, Max Nebelung, 100. For treasurer, H. Cahen, 94. For marshal, N. F. Steadman, 102. Only one ticket was in the field.
The farce comedy, "Too Much of a Good Thing," rendered by local talent under auspices of the Legion of Honor, at the opera house Friday evening, was witnessed by a large and appreciative audience. Miss Robison portrayed the part of Mrs. Perkins to perfection, while Miss Heimann and Miss Fay as Nellie and Hattie Perkins displayed great aptness for the stage. Mrs. Hartung, the Misses Zeyn and Williams, also acted their lines well. C. S. Rogers as Mr. Perkins, Frank Purdy as the country cousin and Tom Johnson as the jealous lover were quite laughable. Mr. Purdy sang "Tm the Man" and responded to an encore with an original composition entitled "Tamales at the Ostrich Farm" which brought down the house.
Jake Stern contemplates a trip to the old homestead in Germany the coming summer. He has been absent 12 years. He will leave the middle of June.
Miss Ella Gardiner, the efficient assistant postmaster, had the misfortune to be afflicted with granulated eyelids, and will go to a Los Angeles oculist to obtain relief.
The Los Angeles Herald has installed a number of Linotype machines in its composing room, and presents an improved appearance typographically.
The ladies of St. Michael's guild will give a revival at the Del Campo hotel May 8. A program has been arranged and the evening will conclude with a social event to go to college to get a degree without a definite goal in mind is not only unwise, but a great waste of time in this specialized era." the educator pointed out. He emphasized the need of not only thorough counseling by qualified counselors, but of careful aptitude testing as well he said.
careful aptitude testing as well.
The importance of ability, aptitude and talent must not be minimized—nor need they be overlooked, the administrator noted, adding that it is too easy to be "that square peg in a round hole." He said that very often young people are conditioned in their choices of a career or a profession, choosing to follow in the footsteps of a ing him for his abilities; if tests parent, or perhaps succumbing to the lure of financial rewards in a particular field when the important question should be, "Do I have what it takes to be a success in this field?"
As a public service, Columbia College offers aptitude tests free of charge. They are impartially administered and carefully interpreted by trained personnel. They do not accept any student for enrollment without first testing him for his abilities; if tests show that any individual does not have this aptitude for any of the professions in which training is offered, he will be advised as to the field of endeavor best suited to him.

The 'Constantine,' an English-built iron vessel, owned by Folger & Co., San Francisco, will be put on the lower coast route to run in connection with the "Taber." This ship was built for the Amsterdam trade, but new plans result in her being ordered to our coast trade.

VISITING MOTHER HERE
Gerald Thatcher, son of Mrs. Erthel Thatcher of 924 No. Olive Street, this city, is spending a few days here with his mother while he is appearing in this vicinity with Mantovani and His New Music, a well known orchestral group. They have been in New York and have appeared in many of the principal cities across the country. On Monday, the group held a concert at the Santa Monica Civic auditorium, on Tuesday they appeared in San Diego, Wednesday in Pasadena Civic auditorium and tonight, Thursday, they will appear in closed concert at the Hoover High School in Los Angeles. Mantovani and his orchestra have played to capacity houses in most of their concerts since the organization of that group. Gerald plays French horn and before becoming associated with the present orchestra, he played with the Manhattan Concert orchestra for a long while.

Tips on Touring
By Carol Lane
Women's Travel Authority
When You Take A Camera
If you plan to photograph your Canadian, Mexican, or Caribbean vacation this year, you should know these regulations concerning cameras and film.
Each tourist crossing into Canada is allowed to take in, duty free, six rolls of film. There is no limit on the number of cameras.
For Mexico, you are allowed 12 rolls of film per person. You may also carry in one still and one motion picture camera.
In both Canada and Mexico, American film is available. The prices are higher than in this country, so be sure to take your limit with you.
For Caribbean travel, there is no limit on either film or cameras. Furthermore, many of the Caribbean ports are duty-free. Film, cameras and other photographic equipment in these areas are considerably less expensive than in the United States.
If you take an expensive camera with you, remember these precautions:
Check your insurance.
List all serial numbers on equipment.
Have all foreign-made equipment registered with the customs.
Young snails do not leave their gelatinous egg mass until their shells have one or two whorls.
International Silver Company of Meriden, Conn., was the first, and is now the largest manufacturer of solid and plated silverware in the world, according to the New England Council.
