A 14 lb. 8 oz. blue fin tuna, believed to be the first rod and reel tuna in United States waters in 1959, was taken April 4 by Joe Mascarenas of Torrance while sportfishing aboard the boat "Hornet" at San Clemente Island. Five others were hooked up, but due to the surprise of their appearance so early in the year, the shocked anglers were not prepared for them. Fishing experts exclaimed that this is the earliest that tuna have shown up in these waters and immediately forecast an unprecedented fishing year due to the early appearance of warm water tidal currents.
