IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO
From the Files of
The Anaheim Gazette
By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL
88 Years Ago ... February 11, 1871
In the vicinity of Anaheim the people are prospering without the shadow of a doubt. Water has been extended to Fairview, and through the Coyote valley. At Santa Ana every farmer is cheerful and contented. A few days since while at that place, we took occasion to inquire of the assemblage of 15 farmers (who had gathered at the store of Mr. Spurgeon) if they were satisfied or discouraged and they unanimously declared their satisfaction with their prospects, and the prospects of their vicinity for the coming year. Now, it is quite certain that, if nine-tenths of our people are satisfied, the other tenth must be the uneasy, shiftless class which falls to our lot as well as to the lot of all other communities, to have subsist among and upon us. While buildings continue to be erected, fences continue to be put up, new lands continue to be plowed, and money is as plenty hereabouts, the man who complains is insulting dame fortune, and may some day expedition hard times some day experience hard times grumbling.
Now that another line of communication is open, being the stage line from Anaheim to Wilmington, it is hoped that our citizens at least, will give it every encouragement and all possible patronage. In order to get the annual meeting of stockholders of the Anaheim Sugar company was held Saturday. The following resolution was introduced by Alexander Henry, Owing to the lateness of the hour it was laid over for adoption at a subsequent meeting: "Whereas, the Anaheim Cooperative Beet Sugar company has labored for more than four years in an effort to raise money for the purpose of building a sugar factory, and all such efforts have been thus far proven failures, and whereas by reason of dissentions in said corporation it finds itself without credit and unable to raise money even to pay the ordinary expenses of the corporation; and whereas there are now $4000 due for debts incurred and no money in the treasury with which to pay the same; and whereas there is no prospect that this corporation will ever be able to raise the amount of money necessary to build the factory or to carry out the objects for which the corporation was founded; therefore be it resolved that this corporation take immediate steps to pay up its indebtedness and to disincorporate at the earliest possible moment."
One of the wags in Schillings' Minstrels perpetrated a horrible joke upon an efficient street car service when he said, after arriving in town he became dependent.

RESOLUTION NO. 1096
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM ACKNOWLEDGING RECEIPT OF A PETITION FOR THE ANNEXATION OF CERTAIN UNINHABITED TERRITORY TO THE CITY OF ANAHEIM, DESIGNATING THE TERRITORY AS THE BROOKHURST-KATELLA ANNEXATION; DISCUSING THE ROUND-AIR OF THE TERRITORY PROPOSED TO BE ANNEXED AND GIVING NOTICE OF THE DAY, HOUR AND PLACE WHERE AND WHEN ANY PERSON OWNING REAL PROPERTY WITHIN SUCH TERRITORY NO PROPOSED TO BE ANNEXED MAY APPEAR BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL AND SHOW CAUSE WHICH TERRITORY SHOULD NOT BE ANNEXED TO THE CITY OF ANAHEIM.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Anaheim did on the 10th day of February, 1959, receive a written petition asking that certain new territory described in said petition be annexed to the City of Anaheim; and WHEREAS, before the filing of said petition, the proposal for the annexation of the territory hereafter described to the City of Anaheim was submitted to the Boundary Committee of the County of Orange, and reported upon by said Boundary Commission with respect to the definitiveness and certainty of the proposed boundaries; and WHEREAS, said territory proposed to be annexed to said City of Anaheim is situated in the County of Orange, State of California, and is contiguous to the City of Anaheim and is uninhabited territory, and said petition contained a description of said territory in words and figures as hereafter in this Resolution described; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds from evidence and reports received from said petition that at the time of the filing and presentation of said petition that said new territory proposed to be annexed to said City of Anaheim did not form a part of any municipal corporation and that said territory was uninhabited and is contiguous to the City of Anaheim; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds from said petition and evidence and reports received that the boundaries of the territory, so proposed to be annexed to the City of Anaheim are
Now that another line of communication is open, being the stage line from Anaheim to Wilmington, it is hoped that our citizens at least will give it every encouragement and all possible patronage. In order to get the "cork out of the bottle" wherein Anaheim lies at present and to bring us better communications, let those we do obtain meet with permanent encouragement.
The Gazette acknowledges receipt of one hundred pounds of apples from the lumber yard of Dicken, Huntington & Co. Mr. Huntington has our thanks and when we require a few dozen lumber of a ton of redwood posts, we will give him a call.
An extensive dairy is being established about two miles below Santa Ana by Mr. Jerome Porter, formerly of Los Angeles. He now has on hand one hundred cows, and is purchasing continually, intending to increase the number to two hundred and fifty. Supplies will be furnished regularly from the dairy after the 20th inst.
The village of Santa Ana now contains about 150 souls. It is owned principally by W. H. Spurgeon, A. L. Bush and D. H. Samis. It contains one general merchandise store, a post office (with daily mail), a fine school house, blacksmith shop, saloon and a number of hastily constructed residences. Immediately outside the town is a large two story brick house which cost about $10,000. It is the property of Mr. T. Casad. A hotel is about to be built and as the telegraph line passes through the town a telegraph office will soon be built.
Our patrons at Santa Ana will please notice that W. H. Spurgeon, Esq., of that place is an authorized agent for the Gazette, to receive both money and subscriptions.
One of the wags in Schillings' Minstrels perpetrated a horrible joke upon an efficient street car service when he said, after arriving in town, he became despondent and threatened suicide. He forthwith hired himself to the western limits of town and laid upon the track and waited patiently for six hours for the car to come along that would send him to destruction. He waited in vain, he said, and changing his mind, arrose and took his departure for his hotel where he became reconciled and abandoned self-destruction.
John Everhardy who has lately opened up the Golden Eagle market in Los Angeles, was in town Sunday. He informs us he has met with very flattering success in his new venture.
While in Santa Ana one day last week we took occasion to go out to Willie's stables and see Silkwood. The famous horse is kept in a rude box stall, which we should judge not good enough for an ordinary roadster. The place is unfit for a horse that has developed such wonderful speed and has become the pride of Orange county.
At the last meeting of the city trustees the immediate necessity of increasing the electric light plant came up for discussion. More bonds will have to be voted by the people as something must be done to put in a larger plant.
O. W. Bill of Garden Grove has sold his five acres to Mrs. Huntoon of Nevada. The consideration being $1500.
There are several cases of measles in town, Mr. Dougherty's young son and Alex Wright's child being afflicted with the complaint.
In conservative families in Korea, a woman is seldom referred to by name. She is addressed as wife or mother on some factory or to carry out the objects for which the corporation was founded; therefore be it resolved that this corporation take immediate steps to pay up its indebtedness and to disincorporate at the earliest possible moment."
WHEREAS, the City Council finds from evidence and reports received and verified last month that at the time of filing and presentation of said petition that said new territory proposed to be annexed to said City of Anaheim did not form a part of any municipal corporation and that said territory was uninhabited and is contiguous to the City of Anaheim; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds from said petition and evidence and reports received that the boundaries proposed to be annexed to said City of Anaheim were omitted to the City of Anaheim are as follows: to wit:
BROOKHURST-KATELLA ANNEXATION
A Parcel of land being a portion of the southeast quarter of Section 19, Township 4 South, Range 10 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian located in the County of Orange State of California, described as follows:
