August 1883 The old adobe house in the rancho Los Coyotes is an edifice around which linger many vivid recollections. It is one of the most ancient land marks in the county, and fifty years ago it was the rendezvous for all the gallant caballeros of Los Angeles. Unbounded hospitality was a distinguishing trait of its owner, and as the household comprised among its members several characteristically handsome blackeyed daughters of the soil, the spacious house teemed with visitors from one year's end to the other and mirth and music rang out unceasingly. Time brought its vicissitudes and changes, and by slow degrees the house fell into ruins, was deserted and now stands a lonely and melancholy wreck, with nothing about it to call up a suggestion of its former grandeur. During the period of its degeneracy, it became notorious as the harbor of horsethieves and the haven of ruffians of every degree and there are extant many stories regarding its wild orgies enacted within its walls during this period. It has long been a belief among the native population that in the house or in its vicinity large sums of gold have been hidden by robbers of early days. Years ago excavations were made about the Coyote house but if the diggers were successful they concealed the fact. The matter is brought to mind by the arrival last week of some Mexi- Over forty teams passed through town on Thursday en route to the various seaside resorts. Mr. T. S. Grimshaw will next week begin the erection of a dwelling on his lot on Broadway. It will be built in the graceful Queen Anne style, 40x26 feet. It will be a noted improvement to the town. 50 Years Ago... August 1908 Dr. Wickett and a party of Y.M.C.A. boys are camping at White's Landing, Catalina, where they will remain for a couple of weeks, at an encampment of the Orange County Y.M.C.A. In the party are Harold Pellegrin, Paul Comstock, Robert McAuley, Cyril Tipton, John and Earl Spencer, Earl Crist, Clarence Beebe, Wayne Gobel, Robert Knapp and Gerald Hagan. They walked to Garden Grove, leaving here at 6:30 on Monday morning and took the electric to San Pedro. Sixty Orange county boys are in camp. Sam Kraemer drove up in his automobile on Saturday morning from Long Beach where his family has been for some weeks past enjoying an outing. He went to his ranch at Placentia, drove to Yorba, to purchase some hay for his cows and returned to the beach in the afternoon. Petitions are in circulation for the paving of Center and Los and reports, and did thereupon oversee the recommendations of the Planning Commission, and did Resolution No. 358 and No. 4521, and determine that the area or changes of zone should be set forth in said resolutions. THEREFORE, THE CITY CILI OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM THEREIN regulating the use of height of buildings and yard; adopting a map showing thearies of said zone; defining the land in said zone and said Zoning Map; providing for amendment, andement thereof; prescribing penalties for violation and repealing all laws or parts of sections in conherence with" be, and the same is hereby amended by changing the laws of the state at Article IX. FOREGOING ORDINANCE and issued by me this day of August, 1968. CHAS. A PEARSON MAYOR OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM EST. E. M. WILLIAMS CLERK OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM CITY OF CALIFORNIA ) AS. OF ORANGE ) AS. It has long been a belief among the native population that in the house or in its vicinity large sums of gold have been hidden by robbers of early days. Years ago excavations were made about the Coyote house but if the diggers were successful they concealed the fact. The matter is brought to mind by the arrival last week of some Mexicans from San Diego who dug away the walls under some of the windows of the house and excavated in various parts of the grounds. After making a systematic search they quietly departed. Who knows but what yet be hidden in that old pile. Maybe whole kegs of doubloons and things? On Sunday morning next, the new German Church will be dedicated. Rev. G. H. Bollinger of Los Angeles will preach at half past ten o'clock. Rev. James Campbell of Wilmington will preach in English in the evening at 8 o'clock. Madame Modjeska and party were in town on Monday. They have gone to San Francisco where the Madame begins a theatrical engagement on the 7th of September. The settlers on Las Bolsas have been holding meetings for several days during the week for the purpose we have been told of apportioning to the different members of the league the land confirmed to them by the Secretary of the Interior. A flowing artesian well two miles south of Fulton Wells, owned by a man named Baker has been destroyed by some malicious person who exploded a charge of dynamite in it. The Anaheim Volunteer Fire company met on Thursday evening at the Planter's Hotel and organized by electing the following officers: N. A. Bittner, foreman; F. Smythe, secretary; E. J. Pellegrin treasurer; W. Wolf, C. Weise and E. A. White, finance committee. Sam Kraemer drove up in his automobile on Saturday morning from Long Beach where his family has been for some weeks past enjoying an outing. He went to his ranch at Placentia, drove to Yorba to purchase some hay for his cows and returned to the beach in afternoon. Petitions are in circulation for the paving of Center and Los Angeles Streets from Orange Street to Palm and from Santa Ana to Sycamore. Property owners are being requested to sign for this much needed civic improvement, and the Chamber of Commerce, under whose auspices the work of circulating petitions is being carried forward, confidently expect paving will be completed before the winter rains. A phenomenon in the shape of thunder storms prevailed on Sunday morning beginning at 6 o'clock. Rain fell in heavy showers for upwards of an hour, 20 of an inch being recorded by Mr. Dickel's gauge. Rain in the middle of August is an unheard occurrence in this section. The storm came as a result of electric disturbances in the mountain ranges east and in Arizona. Rain fell heavily in the foothills and was general throughout this part of southern California. No damage is reported. Joseph Helmsen returned from Elsinore on Tuesday after a week's outing at that resort as a guest of Capt. Barr and H. F. Keallher. Cal Woods was here from Los Angeles managing Mr. Helmsen's business during his absence. Charles Federman was in town on Friday in attendance at meeting of the directors of the American Savings Bank. Mr. Federman has incorporated his wholesale business in Los Angeles with a capital stock of $200,000 and it is now known as Federman, Hersh & Co. During his brief visit he met many of his old friends who have not forgotten their former townsman. Auf Wiederschen. Gerald Sandilands writes from People's Capitalism Who owns American business? People from all walks of life. One way to own at least a share of business is through purchase of stock in a corporation. Nobody knows for sure how many stockholders there are. But one thing is certain, the stockholder total amounts to a very substantial and growing proportion of the American population. Keith Funston, president of the New York Stock Exchange, is currently conducting a stockholder census, points out: “This development of People's Capitalism is unique in history. “Never before has a major economic power extended the concept of ownership—so successfully or so voluntarily —to so broad a base.”
