Anaheim Men Take Show Fleet Trip
SAN FRANCISCO — Eleven Anaheim, Calif., men took part in the First Fleet visit to the San Francisco Bay Area July 3-7.
The visit commemorated the 50th anniversary of the visit of the Great White Fleet to San Francisco during its cruise around the world. A full-scale naval review was staged as the fleet entered the ay.
Following a long week end of recreation, including many civic-sponsored events, the fleet put to sea on July 7 for a five day striking force exercise, code named "Blue Bolt".
Operation "Blue Bolt"
The operation involved 36 ships, 26 squadrons of naval aircraft and over 22,000 personnel. Ships and planes at sea formed fast-moving "Blue" attack carrier teams which struck out against simulated mainland targets. "Orange" defensive forces consisting of shore based naval aircraft and submarines tried to outwit the invaders.
Striking force exercises are designed to give advanced training to personnel preparing to deploy to the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.
