How to Select A Candidate
On April 8 the Voters of Anaheim will go to the city election polls and mark their ballots for three city councilmen. Have you made up your mind at this time which three men you will select to endorse? Have you been reading the articles in The Gazette each week as we present their qualifications to you in their own words? Did you attend the Town Hall meeting last Thursday evening sponsored jointly by the two Anaheim newspapers?
If you have not made up your mind, perhaps this editorial will lead your thinking. It is most certainly true that newspaper editors do not mold public opinion to the extent of their power in the early 20th century. Radio, television, automobiles and other means of communication have made all people more informed and better able to make decisions for themselves. It now becomes the duty of newspaper editors, insofar as possible, to keep the readers informed regarding all candidates and all issues and respect the intelligence of the readers, allowing them to assemble the information and then act accordingly.
Here in Anaheim, in the coming city election, eight men will ask for your vote. All eight candidates made excellent presentations of their platforms at the Town Hall meeting Thursday night: The qualifications of each candidate are beyond question. Their ability to serve in this capacity is not an issue. Their platforms do vary in their method of approach to the many problems facing a city the size of Anaheim.
New Jersey was named the honor Sir George Carteret, one of the original owners of the colony, for his defense of the Island of Jersey in the English Channel during the Parliamentary Wars.

Incumbents Glenn Fry and A. J. Schutte (the only two incumbents running since L. N. "Pete" Wisser, is not a candidate) are "standing on the record of the past four years". More industry has located in Anaheim than in any other Orange County city and the Anaheim tax rate has been held firm, they point out.
Robert Borden would like to see a charter form of city government for a city the size of Anaheim. This is one of the main points in his platform.
Odra "Chuck" Chandler, a candidate again this year who was defeated by only a few votes two years ago, believes the city needs "new blood" on the council.
Jack Dutton has had previous council experience in the city of Fullerton. He was a popular councilman there and was successful in having his reform measures adopted.
Leo Harpin is vice president of Alex Foods and has been active in Chamber of Commerce work and brings his business experience to the council.
Col. John M. Lydick, U. S. Army, retired, is a resident of west Anaheim and has the support of many residents in that area who have been assured that since he is retired he can devote his entire time to city government. He has years of accounting and financing experience.
Lee Morris is a member of the city planning commission and brings this experience to the city council. He is also endorsed by a following of west Anaheim residents.
Now, did you make up your mind while reading this editorial? No, I'm sure you didn't. Talk with your friends or friends of the candidates. Learn all you can about their background. Separate, if you can, facts from propaganda. Then, go to the polls and vote.
Why A "Pall" on the "Mall"? (By Cec Rospaw in the Placentia Courier)

Why A "Pall" on the "Mall"?
(By Cec Rospaw in the Placentia Courier)
Three Orange County cities are now seriously studying the "Mall" concept as an adjunct to proper city planning for the future.
What is the "Mall" idea?
First of all, like one-way streets, the "mall" concept is good and controversial.
As envisioned in Fullerton, for instance, the proposal would see Spadra closed to traffic from Chapman to the Santa Fe tracks with all through vehicles shunted over to Nicolas (which will get Fullerton's first railway overpass).
Spadra would then become a "mall," closed to all vehicular traffic, landscaped, and, if the planners have their way, covered with a plastic canopy.
The ieda is, of course, to give the street back to the shoppers, encourage some leisurely strolling, and to sort of return to the "good old days" before the automobile began to run the world.
Planners feel that such a plan and concept would be a boon to a shopping district, and, if proper parking were provided, would save the dwindling heart of the city.
Such a plan also calls for rear entrances and some real cooperative effort between the city and the local merchants.
Maybe the "Mall" plan is not a solution for some of the problems Placentia City is soon to face, but it is a suggestion, it is an idea, and these, and many other similar suggestions should be discussed, taken under review, and plans for the future should be made.
The largest number of different colors that a human eye can distinguish is about 100,000. There is a machine called the "spectrophotometer," which can distinguish two million different colors.
Jersey was named to Sir George Carteret, one original owners of the colony in the defense of the Island in the English Channel and Parliamentary Wars.
