Market Basket Announces Plans For 42nd Unit Coincident with the celebration of their twenty-eighth anniversary, President Neal D. Ramsey of Market Basket today announced plans for the construction of the forty-second store in the chain. The newest Market Basket supermarket will be located in a new four-acre shopping center to be erected at the northeast corner of Rosemead Blvd. at Longden, bordering Temple City. The market will occupy 30,000 square feet, with an additional 13,200 square feet devoted to service shops. Parking will be provided for approximately 275 automobiles. Start of construction is scheduled within 90 days. "This heralds another advancement in our steady growth," said Ramsey, commenting on his 28 years with the company. "Of the 41 Market Basket stores in the Los Angeles area, 20 are five years old or less. Changes are synonymous with growth. "For this reason, we maintain many of our own service facilities to keep pace with the constantly changing merchandising picture. Continued confidence in the economy of this nation, and further growth of southern California is best expressed by future plans now on our drawing boards at Market Basket." In giving reasons for the success of Market Basket, Ramsey said, "We never lose sight of the fact that the major credit for the success and development of Market Basket belongs to the loyal support of our customers over the years. We exist to serve them." After Elizabeth Barrett married Robert Browning, both celebrated poets, her disapproving father sent back her letters unopened. Edwards, president of Alpha Beta Food Markets, this week announced that a Beta has completed negotiations with the principal stockholders of Raisin Markets, Incorporated, begun last December and acquired 75 per cent of 21,551 shares of Raisin comstock outstanding. Terms of the acquisition in payment to the Raisin holders in cash and long-term subordinated notes equivale to $4.60 per share. Awards said that no public filing was involved in the action. After taking into account the payment of annual dividends on the 77,806 shares of preferred stock to remain standing, and the annual interest and sinking fund requirements on the subordinated notes issued in connection with the acquisition, he estimated that earnings to be expected from the acquired Raisin sales volume could, on a consolidated basis for the two companies, result in an increase in Alpha Beta earnings per common share. A Subsidiary The Raisin chain will be operated as a subsidiary, Edwards stated, but added that an immediate study would be undertaken to determine the desirability of merging the two corporations. In either event, he said, it would be the intention of Alpha Beta eventually to offer the remaining Raisin common shareholders, in exchange for their shares, substantially the same consideration as that paid for the controlling interest. As long as Raisin is operated as a subsidiary, Edwards stated, the shares of Raisin preferred will remain undisturbed. Two tickets to Garden Theatre to Ernest B. Hoaking, 9862 South Dale.
