An Airlift for Santa Claus Santa Claus, the world's foremost authority on air rides, recently tested the efficiency of Chevrolet's new Level Air suspension. Perched on a fender with heavy pack, he appreciably depressed the spring. Seconds later, the automatic recovery mechanism had restored pressure to the system to again bring the car level. NIAGARA FALLS, N. Y.—Mountains of ice in a winter wonderland spellbind those fortunate enough to visit this place of wonder. Huge blocks of ice form a natural, linking bridge to Canada, and as the mist is blown inland, the trees in the surrounding park area are turned to crystalline liers. Niagara Falls succumbs slowly but never completely to low temperatures. At night for nearly three hours the great lights spill 440 million candlepower to illuminate every inch of the crests of both American and Canadian falls, penetrating the banks of heavy mists and drawing the cataracts into bold relief against the darkness. One of his books alone—"God's Little Acre", which is soon to be released as a motion picture—has sold well over $000,000 copies, an all-time high for an American novel in our time. Caldwell, who calls himself a Georgia country boy—his father was a Presbyterian minister in White Oak, Georgia—attributes his phenomenal success to the fact that his books "just seem to grow on the public." He expects that his new book, "Certain Women", which the century old publishing firm of Little, Brown and Company of Boston has just published, will follow the same pattern as all his books have, ever since he wrote his internationally famous "Tobacco Road." "Certain Women" is a story of a small town in "mid-America" told by seven women who lived there. Sheriff Biscailuz Pledges Help in Shopping Cart Loss Loss of market shopping carts is a "shameful loss in dollars manpower," says Los Angeles County Sheriff Eugene Biscalz who pledges use of "every able means to eliminate the problem." The sheriff's statement followed disclosure of an estimated 671,750 annual loss in four southern California counties by food industry spokesmen recently. An Acute Problem "The theft of market shopping carts has become an acute problem in law enforcement. More men hours are spent each year in the investigation, nectaring an added burden to taxpayer." Biscalz declared. "To combat the shameful loss in dolors and manpower, our fice will use every available method to eliminate the problem." California Food and Drug Special Agents association member indicated earlier that "cart-ping" often starts innocently with pushing carts filled with purchases to their home. Lose 1000 A Week "But all too many of the carts never come back," said one. "They are disappearing at the rate nearly 1,000 a week in Los Angeles county alone. At a replacement cost of about $30 each, runs into a lot of money. Don't want to have people arrested but you can see our problems." Most of these carts are made... "Certain Women" is a story of a small town in "mid-America" told by seven women who lived there. "I've made and spent my million," Caldwell says. How? "Just by trying to write stories for people who want to read a story. I'm not trying to change the world—just want to live in it." A stalwart six-footer with an Ivy League look far removed from "Tobacco Road", Caldwell has a passion for travelling. He finds his stories in the common people of America. He has crossed the country so many times he knows the people in every state in the Union, not just in the big cities, but in the small towns and villages as well. MRS.
