HENRY KUCHEL FROM the Files of The Anaheim Gazette 50 Years Ago... Oct. 3—1907 An automobile party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Backs Jr., Miss Winfred Melrose, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Hatzfeld, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weisel and Leland Lewis went to Puente Sunday to spend the day with L. F. Lewis and daughter Miss Cora Lewis who recently spent several days here. Miss Lewis returned with the party and will spend several days with relatives. The three upper classes of the high school tendered a reception to the freshmen at the high school on Tuesday evening. Refreshments were served and an enjoyable evening spent. Miss Katherine Hunter has returned from a very enjoyable camping trip to Idlewild. She spent several days with friends at Riverside and one day at Hemet with Miss Bess Daniels. Pete Nicolas, N. B. Northam, Otto Rust, W. S. Fish, F. W. Tyler. Mr. Pellegrin having declined to act as secretary, Mr. C. H. Zeyn was substituted and the report was accepted. The meeting then adjourned until Friday evening at which time the by-laws were to be adopted and signed. The meeting will be held in the Anaheim hotel, Mr. Gwin having tendered members the use of his apartment. What a tremendously busy place Anaheim is now: on nearly every vineyard the grape harvest is in full progress and an almost constant procession of teams filled with tempting grapes file through the streets and by ways carrying the fruit from the vineyards to the crushers. The harvest promises to be an abundant one. A large wine shed is being built by Mr. Burkle on his vineyard. Mr. Tim Boege has also completed a new distillery building. In fact, go where you will, one will see new houses, barns, and fences. A weekly paper is being published in Pomona by Shört & Morton of Santa Ana. Cox, Otto Harmon are local nimrods who have bagged ducks in large numbers at Bay City since the season opened on Tuesday. Birds are plentiful along the coast marshes. John Elmers an employee of the brewery was stung by a centipede on Monday while handling a number of boxes in one of which the varmint had taken lodgement. He was brought to Dr. Beebe's office and his case was attended. Yesterday he was all right again. J. W. Whann, formerly of this city, but for some time past manager of a farm implement house in Los Angeles, is critically ill at his home in that city. Frank Tausch leaves this week for his former home in Texas. He has been a resident of this city for nearly four years and his departure will cause regret among his many friends. Theo Rimpau was tendered a very happy surprise at his residence on Palm street on Saturday evening by his friends and neighbors, the occasion being his eighty-first birthday. Mr. Rimpau has been a resident of Anaheim since 1861 and has always enjoyed the respect and esteem of his many friends. A large number were present and an evening of unplowed enjoyment participated in by all. At a late hour the party dispersed wishing the honored host many happy returns of the day. 75 Years Ago... October 1831 A meeting of Republicans was held at Kroeger's hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. Frank Ey presided. The object was the organization of a club and a committee of organization was appointed. The following officers were recommended: President, J. P. Zeyn; vice-presidents, F. Ey, A large wine shed is being built by Mr. Burkle on his vineyard. Mr. Tim Boege has also completed a new distillery building. In fact, go where you will, one will see new houses, barns, and fences. A weekly paper is being published in Pomona by Short & Morton of Santa Ana. The outfit passes through town on Wednesday in a wagon—Short, press, Morton, type, etc. The sale of the old school house and lot will take place on the grounds today at 10 o'clock. The house will be sold separately from the lot and both will be knocked down to the highest bidders, provided the aggregate sum offered exceeds $500. The house is strong and will stand to be moved for a long distance. Competition should be lively. Mr. Welsh, superintendent of the Los Angeles cannery, says that "The Browning Brothers of Anaheim, who have the best apricot orchard have supplied us with the finest fruit we have had." The Board of town trustees met on Wednesday. Mr. Saxton submitted a plan for an engine house, and after an interchange of views, he agreed to draw another plan in accordance with the suggestions made. The house was ordered to be built as soon as possible. The matter of awarding contracts for extending the water system was left with the committee on Public improvements. The marshal was instructed to have the principal streets and sidewalks cleared of weeds. The amendment to Ordnance XIV, holding the penalty for disorder conduct $100 fine or twenty-five days imprisonment was adopted, and it was the sense of the Board that the Marshal prosecute vigorously all offenders against this ordinance and also all gamblers and vagrants, complaint being made of the presence in town of several members of that class. A meeting of Republicans was held at Kroeger's hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. Frank Ey presided. The object was the organization of a club and a committee of organization was appointed. The following officers were recommended: President, J. P. Zeyn; vice-presidents, F. Paul scratches his head as he surveys the talents of, left to right: Danny Brawner, 17, 34802 Doheny Pl., Capistrano Beach; John Crandall, 19, 347 San Bernardino, Newport Beach; and Roger Leary, 20, 2254 Falmouth, Anaheim. The band will play at many school functions including football games.
