Heart Disease Mortality Lower In Youngest Age Groups.
Mortality from Heart Disease by Age
(as percentage of total mortality)
Heart disease in this country has become more than ever a condition of middle and old age, Health Information Foundation reports.
As the chart shows, heart disease as a proportion of deaths from all causes is especially high at the oldest ages. Nearly half the deaths among persons 75 and over come from this cause. During mid-life (ages 45-64) the corresponding proportion is two-fifths.
By contrast, heart disorders account for less than five percent of all the deaths occurring among children and young adults under 25.
Of all the people in the United States who die of heart disease, the Foundation points out, 70 percent are over 65 or over and only about 5 percent are under 45. Since 1900, the death rate from heart disease has been increasing at all ages past 45.
Some forms of heart disease—nary) heart disease—are still largely resistant to medical progress. In general, these are the diseases most closely connected with the aging process.
Science, however, has made substantial gains against some forms of the disease, especially rheumatic heart disease. These disorders, which attack mainly children, are associated with streptococcal infections and can be effectively controlled by modern drugs, improved surgical techniques and general improvements in levels of living.
Thanks largely to advances against rheumatic fever, the Foundation says, reductions of over 95 percent have been made since 1900 in mortality from heart disease among children 1
Postmaster Gives Pointers For Speeding-up Mail
Postmaster Marshall N. McFie gave pointers today on how mailers may speed mail and take advantage of postal services. Here are the tips: If you are mailing a sizeable quantity of mail to local and non-local destinations bundle it separately and label "local" and "out-of-town". The post office furnishes free labels for this purpose.
When there is a very large amount of mail and where the mailer agrees to make local and out-of-town separations, empty mail sacks and appropriate local or out-of-town labels may be furnished.
Post offices get the bulk of the day's mail in late afternoon or early evening, and mailers can avoid this rush by mailing at least once earlier in the day before lunch, for example — in stead of dumping a whole day's mail at one time in the late afternoon.
By mailing a little earlier, the mail may make an outgoing transportation connection that will save 24 hours or more in delivery time. The local post office will help plan efficient mailing schedules based on plane and train departure times.

Individual Meat Loaves
No matter how hot the days get or how high the temperature soars, meals still have to be cooked and families still have to be fed. How about presenting your family tonight with a platter of tender, juicy Individual Meat Loaves smothered with a luscious pimiento-mushroom sauce?
This delicious combination of flavors gives off a mouth-watering aroma that will tease even the laziest appetites. Small wonder though when you know how these Individual Meat Loaves are prepared. Tiny flakes of rolled oats added to the ground beef do a magical job of locking in all the delightful meat juices. Mushroom soup, green pepper and a pinch of marjoram all play their parts in making this a taste sensation. A bonus of flavor is added when the meat loaves are topped with a sauce of mushroom soup and chopped pimiento.
Individual Meat Loaves
Makes 8 servings
Meat Loaves
1/2 cup (1/2 can) undiluted mushroom soup
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1/4 teaspoon marjoram (optional)
3/4 cup rolled oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
1/4 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon salt
Sauce
1/2 cup (1/2 can) undiluted mushroom soup
1/4 cup milk
Heat oven to moderate (350°F). For the meat loaves, blend together all meat loaf ingredients and combine well. Firmly shape into 8 individual meat loaves. Place in shallow baking pan. Bake in preheated oven 25 to 30 minutes.
For the sauce, combine mushroom soup, milk and pimiento; heat. Serve hot over meat loaves.

By mailing a little earlier, the mail may make an outgoing transportation connection that will save 24 hours or more in delivery time. The local post office will help plan efficient mailing schedules based on plane and train departure times.
Envelopes too small for contents frequently burst open, resulting in delays or even loss.
Print "Air Mail" plainly on an email envelopes or use appropriate stickers. On large envelopes going first class, it's a good idea to mark, "First-Class mail," to avoid having them confused with the slower third-class mail. Labels and hand stamps are readily available from stores for mailers.
Be familiar with collection times on street or building boxes. By depositing mail a few minutes earlier, it is often possible to save many hours in transit and delivery time. If you miss a last collection from your regular box, it is sometimes worthwhile to take it to the post office where later pickups of mail are made.
In case of underpayment, mail is returned to the sender for additional postage or "Postage Due" is collected from the address with resulting delivery delays and customer dissatisfaction. In the case of overpayment, there is an unnecessary waste to you.
Use Air Mail on important mail that would not get next-day delivery if sent otherwise. The post office staff can tell you distance beyond which use of Air Mail will speed up delivery.
Don't hesitate to contact your local post office when you have a question or problem. The official there are ready and glad to help you.
"Often," McFie commented, "delays in mail may be accounted for by such simple facts that the letter was deposited in a mail box just after the last collection of the day. Familiarity with these simple tips can in many instances help patrons obtain better service."
