Local Phone Company Records More Than 50,000 DDD Calls Daily With more than 50,000 direct distance dialed calls per day pouring through switching equipment at 217 North Lemon St. Pacific Telephone manager Hero Perry announced today that the Anaheim traffic center is now the pilot switching office for all "112" dialed calls in Orange County. This means, Perry said, that the center serves eleven exchanges in the county, encompassing some 500 square miles. In that area are 165,000 telephones. With the inauguration of direct dialing on June 16, two basic types of service were established. One type is similar to the service given PRospect-4 customers last August. They dial an area code, which designates a certain area in the country, followed by the telephone number. Billing information on this call is recorded automatically. Four or more party subscribers using this same equipment in the central office give their own telephone number to a billing operator. The second method in use in many areas of the county calls for the dialing of a "F12" number, followed by an area code and then the telephone number. Dialing 112, reverts the call through the Anaheim equipment center. After a subscriber has completed dialing the necessary digits, a billing operator comes on the line to ask the calling party's telephone number. Locally, Anaheim, PRospect-2 and 4, JAckson and KEystone subscribers have a combination of both types of Direct Distance Dialing, Perry said. All calls cannot be dialed directly, the manager said. Some of these calls that must be handled by operator personnel at the Lemon street office, include person-to-person, collect or credit card calls, calls from coin telephones, or conference calls. A look at the instruction booklets mailed before June 16 to all telephone subscribers receiving DDD will give subscribers most answers to dialing a long distance call, Perry said. He went on to say that something else to look for in initiating a DDD call is the silent way the equipment functions. In some instances a subscriber will note the lack of dial impulses or clicks usually heard in dialing a regular call. This is due to the "electronic brain" equipment used in completing your call. This equipment stores the information, searches for a route to take and then makes a connection—in a few seconds. The manager also noted hurry your DDD call.
