Construction work on Arizona's newest and most modern citrus packing facility in Yuma is proceeding at an accelerated pace in order to meet the completion deadline of August 18. This latest addition to Yuma's rapidly expanding industrial development is being erected by Ventura Processors, Inc., of Ventura, who last year shipped Yuma's first carlot shipment of local lemons. The packing house will operate under the company name of Ventura Processors, Yuma Division. The Yuma Division packing plant will be operated as a commercial enterprise, as compared with a cooperative venture, and will pack and ship lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines for any or all growers in the Yuma area. Grape-handling equipment will be installed in time for next year's grape harvest. Ventura Processors is a member of Pure Gold, the cooperative which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary of marketing service to the California-Arizona citrus industry. All sales of fruit packed by the Yuma Division will be handled through Pure Gold. Among the advantages of marketing all fresh fruit through Pure Gold are lower costs and higher returns to growers. In addition to the new Yuma facility, Ventura Processors own or are interested in fresh fruit packing plants in Ventura, Montalvo, Santa Barbara and Anaheim, where a new citrus packing plant is now under construction to serve the entire Orange County area. They also operate citrus juice processing facilities at Ventura and Anaheim. Stoner Rubber Employees State sonable agreement. During these negotiations, women employees were replaced by men, work was contracted out to other firms causing regular workers to be laid off. The company threatened to withdraw benefits and gave transferring an employee from one department to another. The company refused to negotiate any general Stoner Rubber Employees State Strike Action Case The following statement from employees of Stoner Rubber Company in Stanton, clearly shows their stand in present strike now in effect. "In order that our neighbors and friends in the Stanton community may know how we were forced to strike and picket the Stoner Rubber Company, we the employees, are presenting the true facts for your consideration. 'Early in 1956 we decided that the only way to get decent wages, hours and working conditions was to affiliate with a union. We had only one five cent raise in over five years and were being paid much less than workers in similar industries. We had no job security or seniority. Capable men and women could be discharged without cause or reason. "We affiliated with the International Chemical Workers Union and became members of Local No. 629. The National Labor Relations Board conducted an election and the workers voted to designate the Chemical Workers as their bargaining representative." We were certified by the NRLB in May of 1956 and commenced negotiations with the company. "The company willingly met with us, however, we believe they did not negotiate in good faith in an effort to reach a reasonable agreement. During these negotiations, women employees were replaced by men, work was contracted out to other firms causing regular workers to be laid off. The company threatened to withdraw benefits, and gave pay raises to select employees in an effort to divide the union. Every possible move was made by the company to defeat the union. Mr. Nevon von Rohr, president of Stoner Rubber Company, a subsidiary of Carlyle Corporation, assisted the Macdan Enterprises in setting up a competitive business (Rubber Trimming & Parts Assembly) to that of Stoner located in Huntington Beach. This action on the part of Mr. von Rohr caused a layoff of 20% of Stoner employees. "We requested the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to intervene in an effort to reach an amicable settlement. The company officials refused to attend the meeting called by the conciliators. The International Chemical Workers Union has hundreds of agreements with as many employers. This is the first time in our experience that a company has refused to meet with government conciliators in an effort to resolve the issues for the welfare of its employees. We have never made any unreasonable demands. At our last meeting with company representatives on February 20, 1957, we requested plant wide seniority instead of department seniority. This latter plan would be meaningless when layoffs were ordered, but would also mean that years of seniority could be lost upon the company transferring an employee from one department to another. The company insisted on a firm "no strike" clause in an agreement but turned down our request for union security. The company refused to negotiate any general wage increase other than their offer of ½ of 1% "cost-of-living" increase 6 months from date of signing of any agreement. "The Stoner employees were forced to strike on February 28, 1957, for conditions we feel just and equitable. Workers who are supporting this strike have many years of service at Stoner, some as much as 15 years. The average time of employment is approximately 4½ years. Also among those supporting our cause are 3 foremen, whose employment averages almost 8 years each." "We are ready to meet with the company at any time to discuss an agreement, however, company representatives have stated that they will not change from their last position. We are asking only for fair treatment. We are entitled to decent wages so that we can support our families." "We are appealing to the good men and women of Stanton and other communities for their support. We attend the same churches you do. Our children go to the same schools where your children attend. We patronize the same merchants you do and spend our earnings in the community where we all reside." "Remember, it could happen to you, just as it is happening to us." Signed: The Stoner Rubber Company, Strike Committee of the International Chemical Workers Union. "I'm PARKY, the tidy kangaroo, and I've got a problem! My job is to pick up the litter some people throw along our highways and leaves in our picnic grounds. And frankly, people leave so much I don't have time for MY litter—I miss Junior there. Won't you help me to tell people not to throw things around in the first place? Thanks—I'll be seeing you." through Pure Gold. The advantages of market-fresh fruit through Pure lower costs and higher to growers. Addition to the new Yuma Ventura Processors own interested in fresh fruit plants in Ventura, Mon-santa Barbara and Anaheim. They also operate juice processing facilities in Santa Ana and Anaheim. Did you see that Bananza airliner overhead last Thursday afternoon? It was loaded with Orange County civic leaders, shown above, who with a representative of the California Department of employment made an aerial survey of the entire county to prove that Orange County's population and industry have grown to the point where we are entitled to recognition in state and federal census reports rather than simply being included in "Los Angeles-Long Beach Metropolitan Area" as at present. With the cooperation of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County and Bonanza Air Lines, the flight, which originated at Orange County Airport, was arranged by Worth Bernard, publisher of the new monthly magazine Orange County Industrial News which has been demanding official statistical recognition for Orange County. While in the area the survey party selected several aerial scenes of our community to be included in the July issue of the magazine under the theme "See Orange County from the Air."
