R2 - Anaheim Gazette Anahaim, Calif., Thurs., May 8, 1907 DATE SQUARES 'A LA MODE Bake at 325° 30 to 40 minutes. Makes 16 two-inch squares. Date Filling 1 package (about 7 ounces) pilzed dates ½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed ½ cup water Crumb Mixture 1 cup sifted flour 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine 2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats Ice cream for topping Make Date Filling: Cut dates in small pieces with scissors; combine with¼ cup brown sugar and water in medium-size saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly and mashing dates as they soften, until thick. Remove from heat at once; spoon into small bowl; cool. (Filling will continue to cook if left in pan.) Make Crumb Mixture: Measure flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt into sifter; sift into large bowl. Cut in butter or margarine with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly; mix in rolled oats. Pat half the crumb mixture into the bottom of a buttered pan, 8x8x2; cover with cooled date filling; top remaining crumb mixture; down lightly. Bake in slow oven (325°) 30 to 40 minutes, or top is lightly browned. Cut pot on wire cake rack; cut 2-inch squares. Serve topped with whipped cream if you wish. Baby's Crumb-satcher If you place a long narrow sponge in the pocket of baby's bib, the sponge will hold the pocket to catch crumbs; will also absorb spilled liquids. Nearly 28 per cent of U.S. drivers involved in fatalities in 1956 were under 25 years of age. Yard Look Empty? Plant Trees for "Complete" Look Make a hearty supper dish this easy way: Line shallow ramekin diabes (or the re-usable aluminum pie plates from frozen pies) with ground beef seasoned to your liking. Fill centers with canned baked beans; top each with a spoonful of catsup. Bake in a hot oven (425°) 20 to 25 minutes, or until bubbly hot. You can bake them, too, in old-fashioned mufffin-pan cups—the kind that are deep enough so that the juices won't bubble over. More than 96 per cent of vehicles involved in fatal accidents on U. S. highways in 1956 were in apparently good condition. Regardless of how well tended the lawn is, or how many well pruned shrubs there are, a yard without trees looks barren. Evergreens are fast growing trees that will give a yard a complete, permanent look in a very few years. Other types of trees, although slower growers than evergreens need not be started from seedlings. They may be obtained from a nursery in various sizes with a ball of earth wraped in burlap around the roots. There are few basic rules involved in planting trees which will cut losses. First, don't let the roots dry out. If possible, buy trees with the "balled" roots. Soak the "ball" overnight in a galvanized steel pail or laundry tub of water before planting. Bare-root specimens should be soaked too, and should be wrapped while planting to keep winds from drying them out. Next, pulverize the soil. While the hole is being dug, remove all rocks, break up big lumps of soil and mix it with humus, decayed manure and bone meal for good, starting plant food. Be sure the hole is large enough. The roots should be able to spread out completely with a foot or so of loose soil all around. Make certain enough water is used to give the roots a good start. As the soil is replaced in the hole, make a regular mud-bath around the roots with plenty of water from a galvanized steel rain to run down town tree. When framping down thabe sure it fills all the creebetween the roots. Set thato exactly the same depth before transplanting. Finally, don't forget to newly planted trees freqWith evergreens, the top pbe watered regularly for the two years after planting. vanized steel sprinkling NU MADE Brand Liquid Shortening pint 29¢ quart bottle 49¢ SPREAD LUNCH BOX pt. 35¢ qt. 59¢ SE NU MADE Brand Delicate, Freshl pint 33¢ qt. 49¢ SING DUCHESS Brand pint 29¢ qt. 39£ CRAFT Brand.
