GRADED "CHOICE" OR "GOOD" BEEF RO Part of the reward of a flower garden is the pleasure of picking an armful of the brightly colored blooms for indoor bouquets. Gardeners may enjoy this practice even through the winter, if winter-blooming flowers are planted in their gardens now. Stock and the Snapdragon are prime examples of winter blooming flowers which make excellent bouquets. In fact, the Stock (Mathiola) is really a better cut flower than garden plant, although the base-branching types in separate colors can be quite effective in a garden bed. Two widely planted species of Stock are: the incana and bicornis. Mathiola incana features gray-green foliage topped by spicily fragrant flowers of white, rose, pink, purple, carmine and red. These are improvements of the incana, including the Column Stock and the branching types. Winter-blooming branching types include the strain Nice, Giant Perfection and Winter Blooming. The Evening Stock (M. bicornis) has small lavender flowers and provides a delightful fragrance at night. Stock prefers light, well-drained, fertile soils. Plant on ridges if you garden in heavy soil, and water sparingly, for Stock is subject to stem rot. Do not cultivate or disturb roots. Antirrhinum majus or the Snapdragon is actually a short-lived perennial, but it is commonly treated as a cool weather annual. It is handsome as a garden border, or indoor arrangement. It blooms in varying shades of pink, rose, salmon, yellow, copper, maroon, crimson and pure white. The Snapdragon is available in tall (three to four feet) intermediate (15 to 18 inches) and dwarf (six to nine inches) sizes. A Tetra strain with larger, ruffled flowers has been developed and is fine for cutting. Give your Snapdragons rich soil, feed and water regularly until growth is sturdy. Rotate plantings each year, recommends the California Association of Nurserymen. Overhead watering will help prevent rust. The taller Snapdragons are attractive in HP To Continue Litter-Bug Drive Keeping California's highways clear of litter is the legal responsibility of the driver and passenger of every automobile using our highways, says the California Highway Patrol. "The law prohibits the throwing of cans, bottles, papers, garbage and other refuse on our highways," declared Patrol Commissioner B. R. Caldwell. "This restriction against litterbugs makes it illegal to scatter trash anywhere along the right-of-way of a public highway. "The Patrol is continuing positive enforcement action against..." A.
