Once a practical and romantic young man (you can be both) married the girl next door. As a present for their first anniversary, being practical, he bought her a U.S. Series E Savings Bond. And, being romantic also, he slipped it under her plate at the dinner table as a surprise. As the anniversary dinner waxed on (it was by candlelight) the young man forgot about his gift. Once a practical and romantic young man (you can be both) married the girl next door. As a present for their first anniversary, being practical, he bought her a U. S. Series E Savings Bond. And, being romantic also, he slipped it under her plate at the dinner table as a surprise. As the anniversary dinner waxed on (it was by candlelight) the young man forgot about his gift. At dinner's end the happy couple was paying more attention to each other than to what they were doing. What they were doing was the dishes—and the Savings Bond! After a session with the very practical detergent the bride used, the Bond looked all washed up. But it wasn't. The practical young man wrote a practical letter to the Treasury Department explaining what happened, enclosing remnants of the Bond and asking that it be replaced. It was. And with the original, romantic date of issue—the couple's anniversary. This true story illustrates the safety—the indestructibility of U. S. Savings Bonds which is something you should remember. Any of your Bonds that are lost, stolen or destroyed will be replaced without charge by the U. S. Treasury. That's why Bonds are said to be, "Safer than cash." And U. S. Serjes E Savings Bonds are not only safer than cash, but one of the soundest investments you can make. Your Government guarantees the principal of your Bonds safe—up to any amount—guarantees sure the rate of interest you receive. So start saving this safe, sure way today. Florence Davis presented one other member honored in a special way. As a project for the year the club selected a gift to the Ethel M. Johnstone Memorial Scholarship fund, a fund thru which the clubs can honor members of our organization. This fund is available as a scholarship loan, without interest, in the field of business education. This opened the way for those present to follow the lines of this little verse— If with pleasure you are viewing Any work someone is doing. If you think some praise is due them, If you like them or you love them— Tell THEM NOW. Hats were off to Eva Boyd who pioneered the local club during a period when only a few faithful members kept the charter by meeting under very adverse conditions until new growth could develop. During the war years, she was very faithful at USO and Canteen work and became interested in several Chinese flyers that were in training nearby, in fact they adopted Mrs. Boyd as their American mother. She has always been interested in the Philippine scholarship, Chinese Nurse fund and projects of like nature. No one in the local club would be more worthy of this place of honor, the oldest continuing member of Anaheim BPWC.
